Coach Liu: Lee Bee Wah did not retain me

All it took was for one phone call to ruin a contract.

Two days ago, Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) President, Lee Bee Wah had said in a media statement that she had tried to retain national table tennis head coach Liu Guodong.

However, in a new twist of events, Liu told Lianhe Wanbao that Lee did no such thing.

Previously, The Straits Times reported that Liu turned down a new two-year deal offered by the STTA, calling the deal "insulting and insincere."

The 34-year-old had also told Lianhe Wanbao that not only did he not get a salary equivalent to that of a "consultant", there were also discrepancies in the work policy that the STTA had set out for him.

According to sources, Liu was drawing a salary of about US$4,000 before the Olympic success, reported The New Paper.

Under the new contract, it is believed that the STTA had given Liu a pay rise of between US$1,200 and US$1,600, but he was not satisfied, continued the same report.

As such, he made a call to Lee on Saturday to see if there was any room for discussion.

He told Wanbao: "I called (STTA president) to ask if the contract can still be changed, but she replied saying that the contract details were no different from what we had discussed before and that it was up to me to decide if I wanted to continue on with the contract."

After hearing Lee's words, Liu then replied: "If it's like this, I won't sign the contract."

He continued telling Wanbao: "I felt that her attitude and tone weren't very good...it didn't come across like she had any intention of retaining me. So I didn't see the point of talking further, after all this (referring to phone call with Lee) was a very unpleasant conversation."

When asked about his feelings towards working together with Lee, Liu said: "I feel that she is a person who does not understand table tennis. I have nothing else to say."

Lee had previously said in a media statement: "I tried to persuade him to stay, but have to respect his wishes.

"I thank him for his great work at Beijing 2008 and wish him well in his future endeavours."

To avoid being held ransom by your employee, always make sure that you have groomed a replacement.

now i suppose it's easy to find a world class table tennis coach who can train his players to fight China one on one during the finals? :D

Now no point cos all the China ping pong players all go back home as they have struck it rich either from the games or marrying richer men.

As the quality of players have dropped, we do not need to get such a good coach as the next medal would be only in 40 years time. For now we need a coach to ensure that the new national ping pong player can at least we can beat the China U-12 reserve team.

That woman is an engineer by training. Coupled with the fact that she's a Msian made good in S'pore and an MP at that, it's no surprise that she carries a big chip on her shoulder. Engineers are straight-line thinkers, they dont understand the layered and complexities of human interaction and emotions, except their own. They make very poor people managers. Sportsmen have to be managed delicately or else they wont perform at their highest levels. LBW may need some training in the art of por-lor-sor and stroking egos. Her sportsmen (and trainers) will need lots of ego massaging to win more medals. There're so many ways of keeping Liu, afterall the new contract is worth close to SGD$8000 per month, not that much lesser than that of the "sports consultant". Probably it's the way she said it, that pissed off Liu. I can imagine her saying something like "take it or leave it".

People like Jose Mourinho and Filipe Scholari are paid many millions a year not only for their tactical prowess or knowledge of football, but also their abilities to inspire their players to perform like devils possessed. Champions are not champions because they're good technically but because they can breach their own thresholds. You wouldnt want to break your leg to win medals if you're so pissed off with the woman boss who will bath in the glory of your very own blood sweat and tears.

No emotional intelligence, this LBW woman.

Liu was not a coach before he joined STTA. He was more like a "sparring" partner.

You don't need emotional intelligence when dealing with the Spore Ping Pong Team. Their motivation is MONEY.

Show them the money and they will work harder for you. That's all.

Replacements are not difficult to find. Money can solve the problem -- up to a certain extent. But what do you do when you have the talents on hand? You threaten them with bonus cuts, talk down at them like they're slaves with only one reason to live i.e. to win medals, treat them like EMPLOYEES. Sports champions dont belong to this category of "employees". Any talent with passion can pick up the trade with a good coach and become technically proficient at any game. But it's the sportsman's passion, emotional discipline, mental strength, that win them medals. That bit of extra X factor is the edge. Money alone cannot do the trick -- afterall, China players who are consistently number 1 and 2 are nothing more than socialist-communists picked from young to garner glory for their motherland, first, and then, themselves second. Their motherland not long ago sent tanks into Tiananmen and killed tens of thousands during the Cultural Revolution. SO, it's not the money. It's the human pride.

S'pore style top-down management may work in indurstry and commerce (especially Singapore Inc) , but sports? You can get a good one who scores a medal and the next moment you try very hard to remind them who is boss, and the talent walks out the door. Liu is also a talent, not just Feng. And the PRC Chinaman is not the same as the S'pore Chinaman. They do talk back and tell bosses to take a hike, unlike the local species.

It is not just money. Singapore tried to recuit the coach that bring china into world cup but got rejected.

No sensible or a good coach would want to work under a MP who know nothing about the sport . Just waiting to claim credit and waiting to punish if things is not turning the way they want.

Of coz would reject la. Why would you want to coach the worst class when you can coach the best class?

Typical pap's attitude - 'take it or leave it'

CDC: These are the ntuc vouchers, ai mai?

PAP MP: I've found a job for you - a cleaner at Tuas. If no, don't look for me anymore.

Then you want wat?

Please sir - i have found you a sanitation job. It will pay you SGD10K a month, free transport and housing allowance given. In addition, you will be given a yearly confirmed bonus of 6 months.???

Yes, this statement can only be valid if you are a capable and credible boss. Anything less, it is just another dung in the shit pool.

WTF is going on at STTA ?

LBW claims all the credit when Singapore won the silver, what f88ks ???

It was Choo Wee Khiang's effort !! He made the thing happened, and he step away because of his past. Now, LBW claims all the credits and screws things up.

Give me Choo Wee Khiang any time and I can forgive his past.... But, please f88k LBW off !!

yeah! we should have more of these people here and give them citizenships....then PAP will be a goner....:D

What Liu wants is more $$$.

The r/s will never be the same ever since the Olympic saga.

MP caught lying ??? This is wrong... lying is part of their job scope and responsibility....
