If increasing GST from 3% to 7% is to help the poor, then setting up 2 Casinos in Singapore is to help create jobs for Singaporeans or Foreigners?

If Seagate or HP leaves then we have big big problem.

Motorola is a dying company anyway

Seagate and HP leave SG sure die. Seagate and HP have employee at least 30K and another 60K employee under subcon company( contractor and contract manufacturing).

Yeah, everyday you can see busloads of workers from JB come in for their shifts. With this recession, many companies are restructuring & I suspect making their plans to exit from high cost locations like Spore.

By the time this recession is over there'll be alot more of empty spaces in Spore

business will leave because of cost. no amount tax relieve will save singapore.

these amercian multinational manager come to singapore and see most workers are from china. they will think, hey why not we go closer to worker, rather than let worker come to singapore.

PAP opening FT/FW is actually killing themselves.

what type of fxxktype gov we have. they only see a few months ahead.

I am writing from my experience working for MNCs, both in manufacturing and sales positions. In my opinion, Singapore is fast losing her premium status as a manufacturing hub, be it high-end or low-end. In fact, we have only a slight advantage over say Taiwan, China or other countries because of the many FTAs we have and the tax benefits that MNCs can gain by setting up offices here. Some products will enjoy tax reduction if it's "Made in Singapore" when importing. Furthermore, our government manage to keep the costs of operating manufacturing facilities as low as possible with the relaxed foreign workers policies, a necessary evil, I reckon, to keep the growth engine running. However, by not controlling well, we had situation where jobs associated with engineering or manufacturing as being "lowly" paid and with no much advancement, partly because of the influx of less "demanding" FTs. I am not against the idea of foreign imports. I think they are important to the economy of Singapore. However, I am sadden that this appears to be the only solution our governement has. After so many years, we still could not have a truly global company that we can be proud of. Finland whose population isn't much larger than us has Nokia. And even Taiwan has Foxconn, Acer, etc. Well, I think we still have Creative right?

All I see is the death of manufacturing in Singapore, at least for mass market products, namely consumer electronics. For example, mobile phones or printers where the volume could be more than a million a year. It's just doesn't make sense to manufacture here because it's not cost effective and efficient. However, it doesn't mean all manufacturing can't be done here. I still see opportunities in niche products, like medical or industrial applications, where the volume is small but value is high. Investment in technologies and equipment will be more important than cheap labour. That should be the direction that we shall move forward. The days when a MNC's manufacturing facilities supporting hundren of thousands of livelihood will be gone, a fact we can't change unless we have resources like China or India.

You forget to add in like
1. Cash incentive from EDB and 0% loan interest for setup big MNC.
2. Free land some free building/rental for period of time eg. 10 years many are leaving when time/duration are finnish.
3. Subsidy electricity and water are much more cheaper than consumer.
4. Tax free

I'm surprised the old fart did not sue the pinoy tabloid for implying that the casinos are built to create jobs for foreigners.

The strange thing is....you and i...and the rest of the forumers know we are heading to doom...if we r dependent on manufacturing.

Coz it is a sunset industry.
but
strangely...we are not building our own brand name...

coz our elite leaders thinks importing other MNCs to sinkapore is much better bet and a safer one.

They rather trust foreign companies than investing locals.

:o :( :o

Importing FT is big big business for MIW. Each FT has to pay levy, work permit, housing, GST (if lowly paid large % of income goes to necessities), CPF (higher paid FT). I think money in MIW pocket easily $600 to $1500 per month depending on their salary. Take $600 x 1 million FT and that is $7.2B a year!!!! Big big money

It's no secret that MOT consolidated their manufacturing ops into other factories in the region last year - Singapore will continue to be the business hub for the region. Can confirm that some little birdie's singing the wrong tune (or maybe just singing last year's song). Furthermore - Taiwan? Where'd that come from - so many crazy misinformed liars around.

Sinkapore ending up like Detroit, which also built 2 casinos in a futile attempt to revive its economy, but population now halved.

Do anyone of you expect loyalty from foreigners (probably the only talents that your government values) and MNC? They are only here for the money and will leave if more can be made somewhere else. Only sinkie will suffer here as they have no courage to move out.
