US man held in N.Korea

SEOUL - AN AMERICAN has been detained for illegal entry into North Korea, Pyongyang's state media said on Tuesday, in an apparent reference to a Christian human rights activist.

'An American was detained after illegally entering the DPRK (North Korea) through the DPRK-China border on Dec 24,' the Korean Central News Agency said in a one-paragraph report. 'He is now under investigation by a relevant organ.'

The United States had earlier expressed concern on Monday that North Korea may have detained a US Christian human-rights activist who was reported by colleagues to have crossed into North Korea on Christmas Day.

Robert Park, 28, walked across the frozen Tumen River from China to the communist North on Friday as his fellow activists watched and videotaped his unauthorised entry, according to Park's colleagues.

'We are concerned by these reports. We are looking into them,' State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters. 'We don't have any independent confirmation about either the report that he crossed over or about his whereabouts,' Mr Kelly added.

He said Sweden, which represents US interests in Pyongyang in the absence of US-North Korean diplomatic relations, has offered to seek more information about Mr Park's fate. Mr Park, a US citizen of Korean ancestry, claimed he had seen a vision from God of North Korea's liberation and redemption, his colleagues said, adding that he crossed the border shouting 'I came here to proclaim God's love'. -- AFP
