Based on what I observed, you are wrong or misled by your MALAYSIAN friends to believe that. The truth is MALAYSIAN CHINESE love being Datuk. I have seen more than once full pages of advert of some Datuk (and the wife) in newspapers when they're conferred datukship. And from time to time you will hear about some Datuk being murdered, some Datuk being involved in scam etc. So it is proof that there are many Datuks around and people are willing to have such honour.
