Serious Monica Baey vs Nicolas Lim

Very true, but I believe halls and dorms have their own set of by-laws governing student behaviour. Unless it's something really terrible e.g. murder, the university usually settles the matter in-house.

I think the problems started with the light penalty imposed by SPF...and made worse by the somewhat even lighter punitive measures imposed by NUS.

There's a disconnect between the punishment meted out for similar offences by similarly aged adults in public spaces vs within the institution.

Why does an act, criminalized by law, become less severe simply because it's committed on campus, by a matriculated student?

This clearly shows that women are afforded less protection on campus than in a mall. It also encourages the men to hold themselves to a lower level of acceptable conduct than in the real world.

The problem is Monic Baey showing off her semi-naked body on instagram and calling for a fellow student to be maimed and not bothering to study.

Fat turd loser Lim Tean saying that womens' rights not sufficiently protected by AWARE and Womens' Charter?

When Did University Ever Become A Safe Harbour Against Crime?

Peoples Voice is shocked to learn that nothing more than a reprimand and a semester’s suspension was meted out by NUS to Nicholas Lim who sexually harassed Monica Baey by filming her in the shower. Equally baffling were the decisions taken by the Singapore Police and the Attorney-General’s Chambers not to prosecute him.

If Nicholas Lim is not an undergraduate at NUS, he would certainly be facing jail time for the sex crime he committed. NUS’s decision as well as that of the SPF and AGC effectively means that NUS has become a safe harbour for its students against criminal prosecution. What an absurd notion! Everyone is meant to be treated equally under the law. That is the meaning of the Rule of Law. Further, the Singapore Constitution provides for equal protection under the Law, which Monica Baey in this instance and other NUS female victims in past instances we gather, have not received.

This incident is another example of the discrimination women in Singapore face and they have a poor friend in this PAP government. It took more than a decade after the UN berated Singapore, for the Ministry Of Law to finally conduct a review of the archaic marital rape laws in Singapore. The review has finally recommended that those laws be repealed but can anyone believe that till today, under Singapore Law, a husband can get off scot-free with raping his Wife? This government moved with incredible speed when it came to the fake news legislation but procrastinated for decades when it came to protecting women’s rights in relation to marital rape. The United Kingdom repealed those outdated laws in 1993, more than a quarter of a century ago!

And earlier this year, a study conducted by Finders, an Australian based finance group, found that Singapore ranked as the worst place for women to work among TOP “gender equal” nations with about 20% less pay and savings than men.

It is high time this PAP
government spent more time to protect the rights of women in our society instead of trying to stifle freedom of speech and expression with their fake news legislation.

I believe in giving Nicholas a chance. I've maintained that stance from the start. But most of the oppies here are baying for his blood, to the point of falsely accusing Nicolas' parents of being influential enough to pervert the course of a fair police investigation.

agree with you, the agc and cops have given their explanation in post #269 above.
as to a dickhead of a minister to borrow the metaphor on 2 (or 3) strikes and you're out, is putting this incident out of context as there was punishment / justice (albeit inedaquate to some) meted out to this chap based on his apology, remorse, propensity to commit the same, or another offence, comparison of other offences etc, including a caveat of being thoroughly fucked with that conditional warning if he goes wayward again. he's also not a white-horse, contrary to what has been said. now you have lim tean milking this incident for all its worth.

compare the other cases where the perpetrators got the full brunt of the law (and justly so) in the recent cases and his statement holds no substance.
this chap should be given a 2nd chance under the yellow ribbon auspices, not that we want to trivialise this incident as the baeycunt must've been traumatised etc but "baeying" for his blood and making a mountain out of her cancerous "molehill" is ott to me. enough awreddy

I'm all for giving him another chance providing that he share the video. Without even looking at the "evidence" it's very difficult to opine.

He only opened his mouth when he felt the pulse and knew the heat was on.
Before that, also act blur. As for women ministers like Josephine Teo and Grace
Fu, the silence is disgusting.
They envy what Monica got. It is their fantasy.

In defending the man who filmed a female student while she was showering, the Singapore police said: "A prosecution, with a possible jail sentence, will likely ruin his entire future." When the prime minister sued me, did the government think about how it would "ruin my entire future"? When the hospital I worked at fired me due to political pressure, did they think about how it would "ruin my entire future"? When the prime minister sued Leong Sze Hian, did the government think about how it would "ruin his entire future"? When Jolovan Wham was charged and now faces jail, did they think about how it would "ruin his entire future"? When Seelan Palay was charged and jailed, did they think about how it would "ruin his entire future"? When Soh Lung Teo was jailed on fabricated lies, did they think about how it would "ruin his entire future" as a lawyer? When Vincent Cheng was jailed on fabricated lies, did they think about how it would "ruin his entire future" as a church worker? When Chee Soon Juan 徐顺全 was sued, charged and jailed, did they think about how it would "ruin his entire future" as a university professor? I can go on and on. There have been too many, too many people who have had their futures ruined because the police chose to ruin their futures, because the PAP government chose to ruin them. Good people. All ruined. Because the police. Because the PAP. It disgusts me to the core for the Singapore police to have the audacity to make claims it has very weak moral authority to make. I cannot. If you want to apply the law, apply it fairly. If you cannot apply the law fairly, then don't make the claim you can. When you cannot. Singaporeans have eyes to see. I think, it saddens me that Singapore's laws and its police have become a joke. The PAP has influence over how the law should be used, how it should be used to persecute, and when they think people should be let off when they should not be. In the fake news law the PAP has proposed, they have decided to make "fake news" a crime, but yet have given themselves the power to decide who should not be punished for it. How, how, how can you accept a government which believes it can play god with your lives, I cannot. I don't know where to start. It makes me angry. I have always believed in forgiveness, in believing that people have a chance. And people should have chances. But we have a system of justice, and people who have done what is socially deemed as wrong should undergo a system that has been built, and even as the intention should be to rehabilitate, they should go through the process of understanding what they did, how their actions were unjust, how they should understand how it feels from the victim's perspective, and how this understanding will prevent them from causing harm or hurt again. We have a system, and the system has to be properly respected for it to work. But if we use the system to persecute people who should not be persecuted, while letting those who should be prosecuted go, then can we still have faith in a system that we know cannot protect us? This is not to defend the prison system which can be overbearing in its punishment of people, while not giving people the opportunity for proper rehabilitation. But the point is, there is a system. If it is not good enough, we change it for the better. But fundamentally, if truth, justice, fairness and honesty can be bent and changed as and when, then is there still truth? Can there still be justice? And what of the people who have been put in the prison system unfairly, or if they are poor, or people who fall into crime because the system failed them? What is our system today which does not protect the weak and vulnerable, which let those in power or in the wrong get away, or elites who have the power over those who have not, what is this system we thought we could trust, when it starts failing in front of our very eyes? I am angry. I want change. Because it is unfair. And it should not be this way. It does not have to be this way.
