yeah i think the pro have special equipment, i tried to pan using the cheap HD camcorder, but all shake and vibration, very hard to get it right.
i think he carry a ton of equipment to get it the smooth pan.

did you see the imovie 11 from new apple ilife 11, i think you can also do a bit like that, but of course not as good.

It's a form of defence mechanism, most commonly employed by buddhist monks. These deluded bunch submit themselves to an ascetic existence to overcompensate for the suffering and pain they endured in the pursuit of happiness.
