Mom jailed for killing daughter
A SUICIDAL and depressed woman who killed her sleeping teenage daughter last year was sent to jail for five years yesterday. The prosecution had asked that Goh Hai Eng, 52, be jailed for at least seven years on the charge of manslaughter. She could have been jailed for up to 20 years or life. In sentencing Goh, Justice Kan noted that she had been a law-abiding person who has been treated for bipolar disorder, a mood disorder, since 1999. It was 'extremely unfortunate', said the judge, that she stopped taking her medication in December 2008 after her older daughter gave birth. Without medication, Goh had a relapse but no one in her family noticed. The twice-divorced mother of two lived with her younger daughter.
