<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->A FORMER Ministry of Manpower (MOM) official was hauled into court yesterday and charged with accepting $24,500 in bribes in return for tip-offs about raids.
Law Boon Seng, 32, allegedly accepted 21 monthly payments of between $1,000 and $1,500 from the director of a company that supplies workers.
He is the first official to be charged following a Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau probe last year.
The bureau said in a statement that a syndicate providing illegal labour in the conservancy sector bribed officers from the MOM's Foreign Manpower Management (Employment Inspectorate) Department for information about impending raids.
Law's alleged offences took place between March 2005 and December 2006. The prosecution alleges the money came from Mr Yeo Eng Kiat, a director of Sheng Yun Services.
Yesterday, Law was released on $30,000 bail. The prosecution had sought bail of $50,000 but his lawyer, Mr Kertar Singh, said he was not a flight risk and that his parents and pregnant wife were all Singaporeans.
If convicted, Law faces a fine of up to $100,000 and/or a jail term of up to five years on each of the 21 charges. He will return to court on Sept 26.
