At an age when most people will be retired enjoying life at home, PAP strongman Lee Kuan Yew is still globe-trotting around the world, his latest trip being to China where he met several key leaders including Vice-Premier Li Keqiang.
Li told MM Lee that he has long admired him for ‘being full of vitality and wisdom’ who replied ’sui yue bu liu ren’, which means ‘time does not stand still for man’.
Lee is probably the oldest living MP and minister in the world though he admitted to a community of Japanese businessmen last year that he is not doing much work except “forecasting”.
He once said infamously that he would “rise from his grave” if he found that the country is not heading in the direction which he desires.
Lee also met up with former Chinese President Jiang Zemin at his hometown of Yangzhou. The two men had enjoyed a close relationship.
Jiang has since stepped down after serving two terms while Lee still remains in the Singapore cabinet.
Though China is a one-party state, the Communist Party has institutionalized a system of power transfer in which no leader can expect to serve more than two terms in the powerful Politburo.
The present Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao are expected to step down in 2012.
In the meantime, Singaporeans can still expect Lee to be around as their “great” Minister Mentor.
