Netizens rejoice at the stepping down of PAP de facto leaders Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong, saying that it is long overdue and the duo should have tendered their resignation much earlier.
The two former prime ministers made a surprise decision to leave the Singapore cabinet yesterday willingly though they still remain as MPs in the parliament.
The decision was hailed by most political observers as a significant milestone in Singapore as it will give Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong a ‘clean slate’ to take charge and to renew the PAP’s leadership.
Katherine Ho couldn’t hide her delight:
“Wow!!!! Rejoice!!! They will still be in Parliament, as a MP, but most impt of all, their pays will come down to that of a MP = $15k per mth.”
Marhalim Bin Sairon added:
“Good! We can give those extra millions to help the poor.”
Ghazali Sadip doesn’t mince his words:
“PAP has a lot of soul searching to do. They’ve lost the moral compass to lead the people. This is long overdue, and if they know what’s good for them and the people, Party renewal is detrimental to their own survival. We, the citizens have played a big part in this and as Mr Low Thia Kiang mentioned, from time to time we must “slap the driver” to wake the government up from their slumber.”
The PAP’s dismal performance in the 2011 general election can be attributed partly to the insensitive remarks made by Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong during the election campaign.
It is unlikely that the PAP will change much with the departure of its two most influential leaders. PM Lee once said infamously during an election rally in 2006 that he would FIX the opposition if more of them get elected into parliament. Perhaps now is the time for him to fulfil his ‘promise.’
What do you think about the voluntary stepping down of Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong from the Singapore cabinet? Please feel free to share your views here.
