Miss Singapore World Ris Low guilty of credit card fraud

either they take away her title or change the rules altogether and allow those with criminal records to take part..

no two ways about it

Even if the Spore organisers are willing to ignore her past, I doubt the global organisers of the Miss World pageant would be willing to do so.

She wouldn't be a credible contestant. If she won the title in Johannesburg she'd be an embarrassment to the sponsors.

She needs to be quietly withdrawn and substituted by the runner up. Her chances of winning are pretty slim to begin with....unless she chooses to speak only mandarin and requests an interpreter...the latin americans do this even tho they can speak english....having an interpreter buys valuable time when answering questions.

Also, if she does the crime there can be no restitution...if we let a self confessed felon (she only didnt do jail time as she was under age) represent us, we will be the laughing stock of the world. And she wont win because of it anyway.

You must be deaf - he does not even speak local english let alone Queens English. If he had substance, it would have been obvious. You really need to understand what people are commenting about.

The shitty times is in damage control at the moment..she had B3 for her English, if that is the case; the standard of education for the lesser mortals must be damn lousy. With the exception of those, who can afford to pay for independent schools etc...the product is obvious.

For an International event, the organizers should have given Risky Now, lessons on how to speak, what to speak & pronounciation.

To Risky Now..."Boomz" " Lep pard prince" "Zip bra prince", "RAD" is normal, who can blame her?, all her friends, her teachers her...speaks like that.

so in the local ah lian language.."wha lau eh!, this kind of standard, also got!"
We are not asking for "Queen's English"...but at least to represent a country in an International event..better pronounciation is required.

Bet ya!...she pronounce Rolex as lo lex...and Jose ( ho say) as Jos.:p

Someone must have had a word with SPH. The report is rather glowing. Must be sponsor.

The real problem is not with her poor English or even with the crime she committed.
The real problem is with her thought process, her value system, her ability to distinguish between right and wrong, and the way she is going to continue her life.
She may be given a second chance in life, but this should not include the chance to represent Singapore at a world event.

According to my low level intellect IQ thought process, Ris Low's honest mistakes of committing 65 counts of credit card fraud is the direct result of a her naive, youthful, skillful , courageous and intellectual thought processes.

This girl got guts to take risks, not like the usual Ah Lian SPGs. Ris is capable of BIGGER things.

For that she should be withdrawn from the international meat show and be awarded with a scholarship to do criminology or banking and finance.

the question must be asked... how did she got off so lightly ?

60+ charges of theft , ONLY 24 month probation ?? WTF ??

furthermore, theft related to work, is more serious than normal theft, i forgot what is the actual offence, penal code...

I got nothing against ex-convict, but at least she has to serve the 24 months probation, then the society can slowly forgive her, right ?

anyway, theft for this small sum just show that she is very naive, how to represent singapore ?

hope that she withdraw, apologise to the public... and move on....

How can you be sure her mandarin is any better? I'm guessing if she answers it in mandarin all the PRCs/Taiwanese would laugh their ass off at her accent as well. Maybe they should allow a "singlish" interpreter instead? Answer the question in Singlish? That would be a an interesting sight.

To me and I believe many others out there, her looks rank pleasant at best, her diction may be compromised by Singlish culture but her intellectual content of her answers to questions is like a vaccum, even if she managed Queen's English. That's what caused the public uproar, not her criminal past.

i think these traits very much represent any Singaporeans...

who else could be more appropriate than her to represent Singapore?

hmm...how come nowadays got so many controversial reports by 144th?

SINGAPORE: Ensuring that new citizens and permanent residents feel at home with their local counterparts, Tampines Changkat constituency welcomed them with free vouchers to attend language proficiency courses.

The need for integration among locals and new citizens and Permanent Residents has been a subject of discussion recently with the National Integration Council announcing a slew of measures to strengthen bonds.

Tampines Changkat which is part of the Tampines GRC, has an increasing number of new citizens and permanent residents said its Member of Parliament Irene Ng.

Besides going to house to house to encourage them to join the division's activities, Tampines Changkat's also offering free vouchers to get them to join language proficiency programmes.

This is so that they can better communicate with their Singaporean counterparts.

The constituency's also exploring ways to tap the S$10 million fund set up by the National Integration Council.

Irene Ng, MP for Tampines GRC, said: "We are also looking at new projects to tap on the new fund because we think that to make it sustainable we need to have a concerted effort that draws in the new immigrants and have a mega event that will make a big impact. We not only want to win over new immigrants we also want to win over Singaporeans."

Turning to another group of Singaporeans whose needs are being looked into on a Sunday morning was the elderly.

The Chinese Development Assistance Council's volunteers spent their time with 250 needy and elderly residents who were given vouchers to shop at the NTUC FairPrice supermarket at Jurong Point.

They were joined by Senior Minister of State for National Development Grace Fu for the rice donation drive which aims to raise 80,000 kilogrammes of rice for some 4,000 needy families receiving help from the CDAC and the Lions Befrienders.

The Rice donation drive is in partnership with Capital Radio 95.8FM, Tong Seng Products and Singapore Petroleum Company. - CNA/vm
