SINGAPORE: Ensuring that new citizens and permanent residents feel at home with their local counterparts, Tampines Changkat constituency welcomed them with free vouchers to attend language proficiency courses.
The need for integration among locals and new citizens and Permanent Residents has been a subject of discussion recently with the National Integration Council announcing a slew of measures to strengthen bonds.
Tampines Changkat which is part of the Tampines GRC, has an increasing number of new citizens and permanent residents said its Member of Parliament Irene Ng.
Besides going to house to house to encourage them to join the division's activities, Tampines Changkat's also offering free vouchers to get them to join language proficiency programmes.
This is so that they can better communicate with their Singaporean counterparts.
The constituency's also exploring ways to tap the S$10 million fund set up by the National Integration Council.
Irene Ng, MP for Tampines GRC, said: "We are also looking at new projects to tap on the new fund because we think that to make it sustainable we need to have a concerted effort that draws in the new immigrants and have a mega event that will make a big impact. We not only want to win over new immigrants we also want to win over Singaporeans."
Turning to another group of Singaporeans whose needs are being looked into on a Sunday morning was the elderly.
The Chinese Development Assistance Council's volunteers spent their time with 250 needy and elderly residents who were given vouchers to shop at the NTUC FairPrice supermarket at Jurong Point.
They were joined by Senior Minister of State for National Development Grace Fu for the rice donation drive which aims to raise 80,000 kilogrammes of rice for some 4,000 needy families receiving help from the CDAC and the Lions Befrienders.
The Rice donation drive is in partnership with Capital Radio 95.8FM, Tong Seng Products and Singapore Petroleum Company. - CNA/vm
