Whether it is construction workers, maids, hotel bellboy, bus drivers, etc. What would be the ideal minimum wage?. S$1,500, S$1,800 or S$1,000 to at least buy a 2 room or 3 room flat and survive in Singapore (SURVIVE!!) for Singaporeans.

If footballers and musician can have minimum wage, then why can't the rest of the other industries?

My guess is take home of SGD 1,500 but forget about buying a flat unless 1 room.

It is quite hard to set the minimal wage as different people have different qualifications, skills and experience. Furthermore, the nature of the jobs scope and responsibilities also a factor.

Minimum wage here is to ensure those with Pink ICs and those that have SERVED NS and their parents have the barest minimum to "SURVIVE" in Singapore with a decent roof over their heads, and I am not talking about 5 room flats, perhaps even a 3 or 2 room flats, with 2 children in tow. Is that something very hard?. to figure out.

Its such an easy solution. Minimum wage to apply to all industries except where it is clear that labour supply is an issue. These then can fall into Exemption categories. Any inclusion or exclusion must be debated in parliament where transparency is expected.

Shipyard workers, maids etc are those that fall in this category. All else must have minimum wage.

We must never never have a crutch mentality! Singapore is built on hardwork and no crutch mentality! We will move forward bravely and face all obstacles and overcome them!
Singapore is the best and will prevail over everything!

Come on Singaporeans, do not be complacent!

I would like to know since when do musicians and footballers have minimum wages?
For decades the arts and sports had been ignored by the authorities. They have only recently tried to do something (sports school and more art museums). We have yet to see the true results of this very late move.

Since when do musicians and footballers have minimum wages? If there is it will only be at the discretion of the people who hire them.

You missed the point completely. Granted people have different skills, qualification and experiences for the same job, but we are talking about minimum wage for any job available in Singapore, the minimum salary that would allow a person a decent living in the country. This is the issue. Many first world country have this law so that workers are not taken advantage of.

IMO the civil servants are the ones with the crutch mentality.
I have heard a senior civil servant made a Freudian slip that taxi drivers are not supposed to be rich! And lately we hear someone classifying citizens as lesser mortals. Sad.

Only way is a strong opposition to provide the true checks and balances that Singapore so badly need.

Well said.

Maximum Wage exists in SG for the MIWs and their servants in the civil service and GLCs.

Minimum Wage? Forget it lah.

This is pappy style of running a people, their own people. Their own people are those that belong in their party and roots. Other sporns are not seen as their own.

YES to Maximum Wage in SG!
NO to Minimum Wage in SG!
This is their mantra.

Are you kidding me? The biggest group of people with crutch mentality is PAP ministers and their lackeys, including all the lameduck generals in SAF.

My opinion is that Minimum Wage if used properly can be a very effective tool to combat the increasing number of Singaporeans living below the poverty line. There are pros and cons, just like fire. But I am sure given our "smart and capable" leaders, a compromise could be found. It has to right?

My main reason for support for a scheme that is similar to Min Wage is because our government has let inflation gone a little out of control for the past 1 or 2 yrs, eroding what the poor could earn and save. The living stadard keeps increasing while the wages of the poors decrease. The opposite directions that the 2 are heading resulted in more sufferings of the "lesser mortals". I have known a cleaner, he is getting $800 (take-home, might be cut if co getting less contract or bid lower) a month to support a family of 5. His wife is doing odd jobs and brings home around $200 to $300. His family barely make ends meet and have no savings at all. Please don't say he's not prudent. He just could not have extra after deducting all his expenses. In fact, he said he is fortunate not to have to borrow to meet his expenses. When I asked him about retirement plan, he shrugged and said "one step at a time". He is more concerned about survivng the next day. Retirement? Well, he dare not hope for more. He reckoned he will need to work till he died.

Of course there are other means to help the poorest. If Government wants to keep moving up the standard of living, the least they can help is to provide really affordable housings. For example, my friend doesn't mind a minimum furnished 2 or 3 room flat if he can leased it for 50 to 100 per month. At least it will be a roof over his head.

So how min is min? I will leave it to the government to figure out. But to put a number, I would think 1,200 (take home) is a good level to start.

Div 1, what crutch mentality are you talking about.

I am very sure that any able bodied person, with the ability, would want to make a decent living and a honest day of work. Minimum wage in this instance is to keep one's person and family and provide them with a decent standard of living and not fall into the poverty trap.

I am very sure in the civil service, there is also a set of guidelines for the minimum pay for new workers, if it can be done for the civil service, why not at the national level.
