Ming Yi can leave S'pore..willl he ever return?

FORMER Ren Ci Hospital and Medicare Centre's chief executive Ming Yi has been allowed by the courts to travel overseas, two weeks after being convicted on criminal charges.

The 47-year-old Buddhist monk requested permission to travel to Hong Kong and Thailand between Oct 26 and Nov 11 to attend to some temple matters.

While his request was allowed, his bail of $350,000 was upped by another $100,000.

Previously, while awaiting his trial to start, Ming Yi had also been given permission to travel overseas for his work and each time, the bail amount was raised.

In the past, courts have allowed a person who has been convicted and awaiting sentence to travel.

Former National Kidney Foundation chief T.T. Durai was allowed to travel to the United Arab Emirates in 2007 for work while on bail, pending his appeal against conviction and sentence of three months' jail for deceiving the charity by submitting a fake invoice of $20,000.

A monk who could afford almost half a mil for bail, not bad. Perhaps it's easier as well as more cost effective for the government (and the taxpayers) if he jumps bail never to return. No more tedious and expensive court trials, fees and legal costs, even the costs and troubles of housing him in Changi with special cells with special diets are saved. Even the potential political backlash of finding him guilty is avoided, for don't forget, he still has his sizeable number of ardious followers. Just take the $450k first and hope he skips.
