The repressive PAP regime has come up with another most ridiculous excuse to defend the ill-fated candidacy of its two new candidates ¨C Tin Pei Ling and Foo Mee Har, by labeling their critics as being ¡¯sexist¡¯ so as to obfuscate the crux of the matter and confuse Singaporeans again.
With public resentment against the 27 year old Ms Tin and ex-Malaysian Ms Foo at an all-time high, the PAP is now bringing out the head of its women wing Lim Hwee Hua, who is also a minister without portfolio to limit the damage from the PR fallout.
In an interview with Straits Times, Mrs Lim urged ¡°Singaporeans to rise above the gender issue when assessing the party¡¯s new slate of candidates.¡±
She added that the candidates should be assessed on whether they have the conviction to serve, and their competencies and abilities and expressed a hope that people would not target candidates because they are women, adding that ¡®that would be very sad if it were true.¡¯
Either Mrs Lim is completely out of touch with ¡®noises¡¯ on the ground or she is simply clueless about what is going on.
Ms Tin and Ms Foo are roundly criticized by Singaporeans precisely because of serious doubts about their abilities and competencies and not because of their gender ¨C they were never ¡®targeted¡¯ because they are women. In fact, no women candidates were ever ¡®targeted¡¯ in the entire electoral history of Singapore because of their gender.
The opposition has introduced a number of female candidates too, but there were no objection raised to their candidacies.
The underlying reasons behind the widespread public disaffection and anger lies in the fact that the two new candidates may enter parliament without ever fighting an electoral contest at the expense of other more deserving non-PAP candidates as well as serious reservations behind the selection process and judgement of the PAP.
Though it¡¯s the PAP¡¯s modus operandi to throw up smoke-screen to divert public attention rather to address the criticisms head-on, it¡¯s indeed deplorable to start a ¡®gender war¡¯ between the sexes just to preserve whatever modicum of credibility it has left.
PAP leaders should stop generating unproductive ¡®noises¡¯ to mislead voters and field Ms Tin and Ms Foo in single-seat wards for them to prove their worth and to shut their critics up once and for all.
