Yet there is clearly a new xenophobic mood taking hold that is threatening to become a full-blown crisis of national identity: does Singapore see itself through the prism of an ugly self-righteous and self-defensive nationalism, or is its natural pride in national achievements to be expressed as a positive, cosmopolitan form of nationalism?

Such questions of national identity have historically been in the hands of the government, and Singaporeans are fortunate that its government is clearly dedicated to taking Singapore down the path of benign cosmopolitanism.

Unfortunately that is where the good news ends, because most of the policy options that would deal with this problem appear to be out of bounds to policy makers.

The heart of the immediate problem is http://www.asiasentinel.com/society/singapore-impotent-immigration-policy/

Half of the population is foreigner.

cant imagine what it would be like when there is a conflict.

Very true!
It is very scary and worrying because we know that if large groups create havoc, as in the case of Little India riot.. and if not just one group, but several groups.. spread across different parts.. can our security forces handle?

Will our reservists be really recalled for action? If so, then the pappies have another problem.. what if the numbers of reservists have a huge majority of oppo supporters?

The outcome is very very scary. close to 50% of people in Singapore is a foreigner.. how can a country allow that to happen in the first place?

It is indeed a very serious internal security problem and subversion risk if all FTsh in SG decide to rebel for whatever reasons or grievances and launch simultaneous attacks on sinkies across the country. Can the security forces be able to deal with such situation? The Dec 8 riot had shown the gross incompetence of the SPF. Is the PAP Govt willing to take tough action against FTsh before the situation gets out of hand? The frequent brawls in SG involving FTsh are clear indications that these FTsh do not really care about the laws of this tiny red dot.

60% of stupid sinkies in GE2011 gave the votes to PAP to allow the FTsh to continue flooding into the country. Blames the sinkies.

A very pertinent question. We had Indian workers rioting and Indian businessmen employing their own kind, Caucasians arousing ill will by deriding us, PRC nationals peeing and shitting in public places, buses and trains, and Pinoys replacing local workers. Can our ministers claim no such thing is happening on the ground? They are definitely aware that the social fabric is undergoing testing times and probably do not want to address the issue for fear an open airing will lead to polarization of the communities involved. It is high time PAP stop burying its head in the sand and come clean on this matter.
