Worse news to come

MORE than 100 WHO/AIDS activists, researchers and health workers bound for a major conference in Melbourne were on the Malaysia Airlines flight downed in the Ukraine.

It is believed that delegates to the 20th International AIDS Conference, due to begin on Sunday, will be informed today that 108 of their colleagues and family members died on MH17.
Among those thought to have been killed was prominent Dutch researcher Joep Lange, a former president of the International Aids Society.

Glenn Thomas, a World Health Organisation media relations coordinator, also died in the crash, according to Dr Haileyesus Getahun, coordinator of the WHO’s Global TB program.
Delegates Lucie van Mens, Martine de Schutter, Pim de Kuijer and Jacqueline van Tongeren were also reportedly on the flight.

Dr Van Mens, director of program development and support at the Female Health Company, has been involved in public health, focusing on prevention of STIs and HIV/AIDS, since 1995.
Shocked messages from friends, family and colleagues are filling social media.

Mr Lange’s friend Dr Seema Yasmin, from the US Centers for Disease Control, said Mr Lange was a true humanitarian.
“What a HUGE loss to the world,” she tweeted. “Just learned that dear friend, amazing father to 5 girls and veteran AIDS researcher Joep Lange was on #MH17.”
Australia’s National AIDS Trust paid tribute to Mr Lange, a clinical researcher specialising in HIV therapy who served as the International AIDS Society president from 2002 to 2004.
“Reports Joep Lange died in Malaysian plane crash today, with other scientists on way to AIDS_conference. Desperately sad news,’’ it said on Twitter.
American academic and AIDS activist Gregg Gonsalves tweeted that “Lots of AIDS researchers, activists, officials on downed Malaysia Airlines flight to Melbourne for Intl AIDS Conference’’, naming one shortly after.
“Joep Lange was a leading AIDS researcher and clinician and an activist at heart. Lost today too soon on Malaysian flight 019. RIP.’’
Dr Getahun broke the news about Mr Thomas, tweeting: “Saddened to learn that my friend and @WHO staff who was traveling to @AIDS_conference to Melbourne was on flight #MH17. RIP #Glenn Thomas”.
His colleague Dr Rachel Baggaley, of the WHO’s HIV Department, told Vox: “I’m just devastated. He’s a very close colleague whom I work with on a daily basis.
“He just had his birthday, he was going to plan all sorts of celebrations.”
Nicole Schiegg, a former Senior Advisor at USAID, tweeted: “I am still stunned. So sorry & thoughts are with Glenn’s extended @WHO family at this time.
“Glenn was a great guy & will be missed.”
Jennifer Yang, global health reporter at the Toronto Star, tweeted: “So saddened to hear about lovely, funny, whip-smart Glenn.”

UN Aids executive director Michel Sidibe tweeted: “My thoughts & prayers to families of those tragically lost on flight #MH17. Many passengers were enroute to #AIDS2014 here in #Melbourne.”

The IAS released a statement today confirming the death of a number of attendees to the 20th Annual AIDS Conference.

“The International AIDS Society (IAS) today expresses its sincere sadness at receiving news that a number of colleagues and friends en route to attend the 20th International AIDS Conference taking place in Melbourne, Australia, were on board the Malaysian Airlines MH17 flight that has crashed over Ukraine earlier today,’’ it said.

“At this incredibly sad and sensitive time the IAS stands with our international family and sends condolences to the loved ones of those who have been lost to this tragedy.”
Former US president Bill Clinton, Sir Bob Geldof, the executive director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Mark Dybul, Indonesian Health Minister Nafsiam Mboi, Swedish Ambassador for Global Health Anders Nordstrom and UNAIDS executive director Michel Sidibe are down as speakers at the conference.

Mark Gettleson, a London-based self-described campaigner, pollster and political analyst, said on Twitter he knows AIDS campaigners on their way to the conference were on the doomed flight.
“Several on MH17 flight were STOPAIDS activists en route to AIDS2014 conference in Melbourne, fighting to save lives. Tragic,’’ the tweet said.

MH17 is a "Aussie" backpacker's flight.

AUSTRALIA is demanding a full international investigation into the attack on a Malaysia Airlines flight in Ukraine that has killed almost 300 people, including 27 Australians.

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott says Australia is pushing in the United Nations Security Council for a binding resolution to establish a full and impartial investigation into the suspected surface-to-air missile attack on MH17.

Investigators should have full access to the site, debris, black box and anyone who may be able to shed light on the terrible event, he said.

Coming from an emergency meeting of the government's powerful national security committee of cabinet, Mr Abbott told parliament it appeared Russian-backed rebels were responsible for the attack.

"As things stand this looks less like an accident than a crime," he said.

If that was the case, the perpetrators must be brought to justice.

"We owe it to the dead and their families, we owe it to the peace and stability of the wider world to establish the facts and we will do all we humanly can to bring that about."

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop will summon Russia's ambassador to Australia to get assurances that Vladimir Putin's government will fully cooperate with an investigation.

A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade team is preparing to leave for the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.

Bodies of the Australian victims will be brought home as soon as possible, Mr Abbott says.

Ms Bishop has cautioned the final number of Australian dead could rise, with the nationality of as many 47 of the dead not yet determined.

But she says it's premature to discuss whether Australia will consider banning Mr Putin from attending the upcoming G20 summit in Brisbane.

The aircraft was travelling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it came down in rebel-held eastern Ukraine.

Australia had the third highest number of people on the flight, after the Netherlands and Malaysia.

Australian families have been confronted with harrowing scenes from the crash site. Some media outlets have screened footage of the smouldering wreckage and bodies and luggage strewn across a field.

The flight was ultimately bound for Australia, which explains why so many Australians were onboard.

AUSTRALIA will observe a national day of mourning as a mark of respect to citizens killed in the Ukraine Malaysia Airlines crash.

TWENTY-EIGHT Australians are confirmed dead after the demise of flight MH17 on Friday, with authorities warning that number could rise.
In response to the "horrific" event, Prime Minister Tony Abbott has ordered that the national flag be flown at half-mast at all Australian government establishments on Saturday.

RIP

why the number tally by nationality keeps on changing? suddenly we have 18 unconfirmed passengers? fake passports?

Australians have an adventurous spirit and like to live dangerously.

Better to live fully and go out with a bang, than to wonder if you can take out your CPF when you are old.

......Better to live fully and go out with a bang, than to wonder if you can take out your CPF when you are old.....

That will be CPF and PAP porlumpars's new slogan.

I hope you will be paid S$10,000 for it or at the very least PAP porlumpars acknowledge you in their credits.

Australia worries too much. Wait till Quantas then they should worry.

Well, the fact is I am... Although only the winners will be remembered in the annals, I believe 3rd place is a great showing for the dutch, considering the squad at their disposal. Before the tournament, I would've be considered quarter finalist at best. But Van Gaal and Robben's form have carried them further than they might have imagined. Put it this way, before the start of the tournament, you probably would have rated Italy and Spain having a chance in reaching the top four than the Dutch. Thus I would say their third place is akin to Southampton playing European competition(Which sadly wasn't the case, thus you see half their first team in Liverpool now).

Are you sure??? Bali bomb is more worst for Australia.

Only 2 Southampton players at Liverpool so far lah, hahaha............................ :D
