SINGAPORE - Thinking he had an easy target, a 41-year-old male approached an elderly woman from behind and yanked the gold chain off her neck before attempting to make a run for it.

The public-spiritedness of two members of public had resulted in the arrest of a 41-year-old male suspect for committing snatch theft.
On 6 November 2013 at about 10.15 am, a 67-year-old female victim was walking along Choa Chu Kang Avenue 3 when an unknown male suspect came from her rear to snatch the gold chain from her neck and fled in the direction towards Choa Chu Kang Central.
The victim gave chase and shouted for help, which thereafter attracted the attention of two members of the public.
They chased after the suspect and detained him at Blk 227, Choa Chu Kang Central. Police were eventually called in to arrest the suspect.
The suspect will be charged in Court on 8 November 2013 for the offence of Snatch Theft under Section 356 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted, the suspect faces a maximum jail term of 7 years and shall also be liable to caning.
Commander of Jurong Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (DAC) Wilson Lim commended the two members of the public for coming together as a community to fight crime through their selfless and civil-minded actions.
Meanwhile, DAC Wilson Lim urged members of the public be alert of their surroundings for suspicious persons, to avoid falling prey to such opportunistic criminals. When they encounter such situations, they should remain composed, and to note down the suspect's description and to alert the Police as soon as it is safe to do so.
