MDA wants $50,000.00 from Sam?

This is probably to target and bring in line big news sites like Yahoo!, etc.

Good luck to the authorities enforcing it though.

He is a favoured son of the PAP.

Has your claim been corroborated with other independent facts?

If your assertion is true, it means scroobal's cover's been blown. Of what use is he to PAP then?

What does PAP do, under normal circumstances, with people whom it thinks have outlived their usefulness?

This is not a news website. It is just a low-grade forum.

Re: New licensing scheme for news websites that reach 50,000 people a month

How will they know the number of readers in each website? I suspect PAP want to gather the total number of populace surfing internet to come out with new strategy for the next election, thus they schemed such licence to feed into govt coffer. How come no debate or approval from the public about this new licensing? Another policy came out from whims and fancies of PAP game.

you do not debate a directive from the top. debates are meant for inconsequential matters. you think this is a WP run country is it???

this is going to be yet another futile attempt by the establishment to tame the internet beast. they realised this when they tried to block porn websites, which did not work. So they just do a token block. Now this rubbish again. They even want to control foreign websites that report on singapore. The pap is truly staffed by idiots in ivory towers.

New licensing scheme for news websites that reach 50,000 people a month
Singapore | Updated today at 05:29 PM
By Tessa Wong

From June 1, websites that regularly report Singapore news and have significant reach will require individual licences to operate.

Currently, most websites are covered automatically under a class licence scheme. But the Media Development Authority (MDA) will require websites to be individually licensed once they meet two criteria.

These are: if they report an average of at least one article per week on Singapore's news and current affairs over a period of two months, and have at least 50,000 unique visitors from Singapore each month over a period of two months. The individual licenses have to be renewed every year.

Under the new framework, these sites must also put up a performance bond of $50,000, similar to that required for niche TV broadcasters.

50,000 visitors? SBF has barely 50 visitors.

50,000 visitors? SBF has barely 50 visitors.

Based on my stats script, I have about 30,000 unique visits daily.

Whether that translates into more than 50,000 visitors per month is a question that I can't answer as it could be the same 30,000 people visiting daily for the whole month. :p

TOC is an interesting case. it is already gazetted right? whatever it means...

what is MDA gonna do with the money? make another bad video or sponsor another Ilo Ilo for Cannes?

longest 4 1/2 minutes of my life. they intended it to amuse and instruct. We can agree it did both.

I want to see how those idiots are going to implement it.

The MDA should hire Al Gore as a consultant. Since he started the Internet, maybe he knows how to stop it.
