ZHANGJIAKOU, China -- A ski resort backed by tropical Malaysia's Genting Group will host its first Winter Olympics events with freestyle skiing on Thursday, as China prepares for the official opening of the Beijing Games on Friday.

Genting Snow Park, in Zhangjiakou's Chongli County, is the only one out of nine such facilities in the city selected as an Olympic venue. Located about an hour by train from the capital, the park will host adrenaline-filled events including aerials and moguls as well as snowboarding.

All told, around 20 gold medals will be handed out there -- the most for a single Winter Olympics venue.

The resort opened in 2012 as Genting Resort Secret Garden and received a personal inspection by President Xi Jinping five years ago. At the time, he told resort founder Lim Chee Wah to "earnestly implement the plan and ensure the construction of ski slopes as well as [ensure] related supporting facilities are of high quality," according to the facility's website.

China was a latecomer to winter sports, which are more popular among developed economies. Snow falls mainly in the mountains north of Beijing, and before the country's economic surge in recent decades, there were few places to ski.

When Lim, whose late father established Genting itself, was looking for land to build the resort in the mid-1990s, Chongli was only reachable with a five-hour drive.

Still, he and Genting -- a conglomerate best known for its casinos -- bet 18 billion yuan ($2.8 billion) in initial investment to build Secret Garden. It now boasts ski slopes, hotels and residential developments nearby.

"Snow resorts in 1996 were very basic," Lim told Phoenix New Media in an interview last year. "I am an entrepreneur and choosing a location depends on the market, which is crucial to ensure business returns."

During his visit in 2017, Xi expressed gratitude to the Malaysian conglomerate and Lim for their contribution to the Olympics and development of winter sports in China.

The men's and women's moguls qualifying rounds begin at Genting Snow Park on Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, local media are working in overdrive mode to put a positive spin on the Games amid a U.S.-led diplomatic boycott and strict lockdowns in some Chinese cities to curb COVID-19 outbreaks.

State media Xinhua put up a report on Wednesday about China's "dramatic transformation" between the Beijing Summer Olympics in 2008 and now, highlighting the country's success in eliminating poverty and achieving lunar exploration breakthroughs.

Yesterday I visited RWS and the Baccarat machine min bet stay at $50. Not many gamblers there I think many came out with broken hands and legs. RWS is laughing all the way to the bank. CRA too are happy with tax revenues.
Very sad for players who loss their bonus, life saving etc in RWS and MBS.
Lucky for me win $320 gross minus day levy $150 nett win $$170.
Best to shut down the 2 casinos to prevent commercial crimes.

Crimes usually committed by gamblers. Borrowing money from unlicensed money lenders, CBT, Cheating robbery and etc mostly cause by gambling habit os time to shut down the 2IRs immediately to prevent crimes arise.

Former Marina Bay Sands executive Andrew MacDonald is set to join the company’s Singapore rival Resorts World Sentosa (RWS), IAG has learned.

According to sources, RWS management held a meeting on Friday night 26 Aug 2022 at which the company’s CEO, Tan Hee Teck, informed key staff of the move. MacDonald, who will start from 1 September, will oversee gaming operations and casino marketing across the integrated resort.

His appointment at RWS comes just 12 months after MacDonald stepped down as Corporate Senior Vice President and Chief Casino Officer at MBS operator Las Vegas Sands.

A veteran of four decades in the industry, MacDonald’s career began as a dealer at Australia’s Wrest Point Casino in Hobart, Tasmania, before he became a regulator in Queensland.

He logged stints at Genting, Crown and Jupiters Gold Coast – now The Star Gold Coast – before leaving gaming for investment banking as Managing Director and Co-Global head of Macquarie Capital.

LVS tapped MacDonald to join MBS in January 2010 where he eventually moved into a corporate role in 2012, rising to the role of Chief Casino Officer for the company globally. His duties included casino performance analysis and strategic recommendations for every Las Vegas Sands and Sands China Limited property.

Industry insiders have long said MacDonald has one of the sharpest mathematical minds in the gaming business and his influence on the industry can be felt across the planet – from Australia to Macau, Las Vegas to Singapore – and in his teachings to quite literally tens of thousands of casino workers on the world’s gaming floors.

His appointment by RWS now places him in direct competition with his former employer as he looks to grow the company’s Singapore market share. According to analysts, MBS has traditionally held between 55% and 60% of Singapore’s gross gaming revenues in recent years.

SINGAPORE:

A foreigner belonging to a syndicate has been accused of conspiring to record cards that were dealt during gambling at Marina Bay Sands Casino.

Hung Jung-Hao, a 27-year-old Taiwanese citizen, is accused of engaging in a conspiracy with several others between 1.49am and 1.52am on Dec 23 at the casino in Bayfront Avenue.

He allegedly used his mobile phone to transmit the value and suit of the cards dealt in a game of 7 UP Baccarat to a chat group that was titled in Chinese: "15/12 Work in Singapore Chat Group (9)."

This chat group was purportedly set up to enable the group to record cards dealt in the course of gambling in the casino.

Hung's lawyer, Sng Kheng Huat, argued for his client to be released out on bail on Friday (Dec 30).

But the prosecution asked for further remand, saying that Hung is involved in a syndicated case with at least six other people.

Three suspects have been identified but have fled, while the other three co-accused are unknown.

Hung's presence is required to trace the remaining co-accused, said the prosecutor.

However, Mr Sng said Hung has been remanded since Dec 26, and there is a risk that he may be remanded for longer than his eventual sentence, which might not involve a jail term.

Another prosecutor chimed in and cited law, saying a court may order further remand in the case where the accused is a foreigner and where syndicated operations are involved.

"So he's a flight risk," said the judge, and the prosecutor agreed.

Mr Sng then said the case has to be fast-tracked as Hung is a foreigner and expressed his hope it will be expedited. The prosecutor said the case would be brought forward if possible.

The judge granted a further remand of one week, with permission for Hung to be taken out for investigations.

Under the Casino Control Act, a person who uses a device to count or record cards dealt in the course of gaming in the casino can be jailed up to seven years, fined up to S$150,000, or both.
