HARBIN, July 17 (Xinhua) -- A fire which broke out in a used car factory in northeast China's
Heilongjiang province has been put out and no casualties have been reported so far, according to
firefighters.
The fire broke out around 12 p.m. in Xiangfang district of Harbin, the provincial capital, firefighters
at the scene said.
According to residents, the factory workers using gas welders may have caused the fire.
Nearby residents mentioned that the factory had caught fire two years earlier.
The surrounding area has been evacuated. The fire also engulfed four residential houses and residents
were trying to save valuables from burning homes, the firefighters added.
The spiralling black smoke had a pungent odor, as many tires had been set alight.
The factory is located in a densely populated residential area and most residents use liquefied petroleum
gas tanks in their homes, which are being evacuated for fear of explosions.
The local fire department has launched a further investigation into the accident.
