DPM Teo Chee Hean’s subtle threat that voting for the opposition will cost Singaporeans dearly has not gone down well with the ground as anti-PAP sentiments continue to rise ahead of the coming General Election.
Speaking to the media on Thursday to release the PAP’s sixth batch of new candidates, DPM Teo warned that Singaporeans “may end up paying “quite a high premium” if they vote for the opposition, and should instead continue to support the ruling party.”
He was responding to Workers’ Party Chief Low Thia Kiang’s earlier comments on Singaporeans to buy ‘political insurance’ by voting for the opposition in case the PAP fails.
DPM Teo’s remarks sparked a massive backlash in cyberspace with many netizens lampooning him for ‘threatening’ voters again.
Hopeless posted on Yahoo News:
“”It is kind of threatening, don’t vote for me you will get dearly retribution is that what you mean Mr teo??? Never a time been a bad time now for PAP, time had changed and we never been heard when there were raised in pricing on ERP,BUS FARE,PAY INCREASE FOR MP,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH……now we want more opposition parties in e parliament to debate on behalf of e people!!!! Singaporean are not stupid anymore, can’t imagine PM and MP can give this kind of comments very disappointed.”
Targetted concurred:
“I am really abhor at threats of the PAP. They continue to belittle the oppositions and the intelligence of the public. DPM Teo attitude is even worse, he felt that any criticism is bad, we should all be yes-man. Maybe because of his background as a military man, but we are not his soldiers and we have the freedom to speak out when needed. If he one day ever becomes the PM, we are in trouble. It is going to be Myanmar all over again.
Have PAP not learned by now that the people want a government who understand them and identify with them, not one that lords over them and suck them dry. Think about who vote for PAP to become the government, it is the common citizen. PAP has not only betray our trust but is now using that trust to make us suffer, using that trust PAP imported new citizens from other countries hoping to consolidate their votes and kick us aside. We will not make that mistake again, we will rather feed the dogs then to empower you again.
It is now or never, if we do not send a strong enough message to the PAP that we are unhappy and we want changes we may never have another chance. I will love to see the PM, and DPMs kicked out of parliament so that they know we are serious. We should have at least 50% opposing voice in the parliament, if not more.”
Singaporeans should not be cowed by the latest threats from the PAP leaders which are expected to grow as the PAP mounts a last-minute attempt to preserve its political hegemony.
After 5 years of misery under the PAP, Singaporeans really have nothing more to lose or to be afraid about.
