SINGAPORE – The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) on Monday (15 May) launched a new S$10 coin (LKY100 coin) to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of Singapore's founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.
In a press release, MAS said that "the coin pays tribute to Me Lee's strategic vision, boldness and indomitable spirit that transformed Singapore from a regional trading port to a global manufacturing, business and financial hub, creating opportunities for all Singaporeans".
The coin – at 30mm, it is about 22 per cent larger than the current Third Series S$1 circulation coin – is designed by local artist Weng Ziyan.

Gold in colour and minted in aluminium bronze, its design features a portrait of Lee, accompanied in the foreground by the Marina Barrage, "representing Mr Lee's vision to build a freshwater reservoir in the city, strengthening Singapore's water resilience".
Meanwhile, the backdrop is the skyline of the Raffles Place financial district, and two heritage buildings which have witnessed significant milestones in Singapore's history – Fullerton Hotel and National Gallery Singapore.

The other side of the coin has the Singapore Coat of Arms with a dual latent image featuring Lee's birth year of '1923' when viewed from one angle, and his 100th birth anniversary '2023' when viewed from another.

Applications can be made online from Monday till the end of 9 June. The applicant must be a Singapore citizens or permanent resident.
Each applicant can apply for up to five coins. "If demand is high, applicants may not be allocated the quantity of coins requested, but can be assured of being allocated at least one coin," said MAS.
"No upfront payment will be requested at the point of application. Successful applicants will pay for the coin(s), at its face value of S$10 each, when collecting the coin(s) at the banks," MAS added.
The LKY100 coins will be available for collection from September 2023. Successful applicants will receive an SMS notification from mid-August 2023, prior to the collection period allocated to each applicant. The SMS notification will include information on the quantity of coins allocated, collection period and bank branch allocated. All SMS notifications from MAS for the LKY100 coin will not contain any clickable link nor ask for any upfront payment.
"LKY100 coins that are not exchanged during the collection window will subsequently be made available for exchange at the banks by the general public, including non-Singaporeans," said MAS.

We should grab the chance. It’s like HDB and NS - only Singaporeans and PR can enjoy such privileges.

Will somebody be rolling in his grave knowing its against his and the executors of his estate's wishes?
Actually can any legal expert provide an insight as to whether permission is legally required from the family to use his image and who has the right to agree/refuse

I am only an insignificant nobody simpleton, but a fellow citizen.

Let's be pragmatic. The late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew had been a public figure for decades. His photos & image had been splashed across media for decades & even school curriculums Worldwide. It is considered fair use, so long as those images had not be doctored or misused for personal gain or defamation purposes.

He had sought NOT to be consecrated - to prayed 5 times a day, fast for a month each year, go to church to worship him each Sunday, etc... because he knew he is NOT god or attained apotheosis, & NOWHERE had he EVER claimed such. He was only an ordinary mortal, but became a hero in the eyes of many whom knew him, not by his looks but his dedicated egalitarian efforts that uplifted a PEOPLE whom were long ignored by colonial masters & racists overlords, to us ALL citizens for what we are able to appreciate our todays, when compared to other neighbors whom had the same opportunities at that era but failed miserably.

A hero is only an ordinary Human whom performed extraordinary in extraordinary times. Many considers him the Father of our Nation, & shall be honored as such. His face on the commemorative coin is only but from thousands of pictures of him in public sphere, & used in order to honor him for his efforts to build up our country & our lives.

Should anyone - his heirs - is against Fair Use & wants his pictures removed, they will have to remove every picture of him from Worldwide libraries & any existing digital media too.

Singapore is a democracy, where we elect our own legislators. If anyone is against having the Father of the Nation picture on the commemorative coin, they are free to speak to their members of Parliament, free to voice out & either change others perspective or BE CHANGED by others perspective thru logic & reason, & not by personal grievances.

dumbass.... the coins probably cost $1 each to produce. you are already $9 out of pocket with each coin
If they really selling at $10 which is the face value, the buyer has nothing to lose. The buyer can always use it to buy groceries thereafter with the $10 coin as it is legal tender. If kept for a few years, the collectors’ value may even increase beyond the $10 and the buyer can then sell to make a profit. Not that I am a fan of LKY but I am only thinking of the monetary gains that can be made later. So I would encourage all to register and get you full entitlement of 5 coins each.

Please change the title to .."Only Sinkies, PR, CECA and Americans can buy". Remember under the new FTA (and more to come), they enjoy the same privileges as Singapore except for NS.

Are you sure the FTAs allow them to buy these shitty coins? I saw that you need to enter your NRIC number and phone number on the coin ordering form.
