SINGAPORE: Television host and radio deejay Marcus Chin must now pay his estranged wife S$4,000 every month for her maintenance and for loan instalments for their matrimonial HDB flat.
This decision came following a four-day hearing after his spouse, 55-year-old Murong Ying -- whose real name is Yan Wen Lin -- took him to the Family Court over a dispute involving the amount she should receive.
Mr Chin had been paying her S$1,500 since June 2009.
Fifty-seven-year-old Mr Chin must also fork out another S$7,000 - which is the cost incurred by his wife in the case.
The court heard the pair tied the knot in 1986 but separated in 2008 when Mr Chin decided to move out of their flat.
He had then promised to give Madam Yan S$5,000 every month for her maintenance and kept his word from October 2008 to May 2009.
But he reduced it to S$1,500 from June 2009, claiming he did not have enough money.
In her judgment, District Judge Brenda Tan highlighted Mr Chin had told the court he earned about S$9,000 every month.
But from court proceedings, there were indications he earned more than that.
Judge Tan also recognised that Madam Yan, who is a housewife, had supported her husband's career when they were living together.
She had helped him sell his concert tickets and once even injured her wrist as she had helped him carry his CDs and tapes which were used for one of his shows.
The judge recognised that Madam Yan had not worked for the last 10 years and her current earning ability was unclear.
She also noted that Madam Yan's standard of living had dropped since the separation.
However, Judge Tan pointed out that Mr Chin was now a member of another family unit.
The portly entertainer is currently in a relationship with 25-year-old Eileen Cheah who is the mother of his baby daughter.
He has a legal duty to maintain this new family, said Judge Tan before delivering her decision.
Speaking to reporters outside the Family Court, a calm Madam Yan said she accepted the judgment.
She added she harboured no ill-feelings towards Mr Chin and wished his new family well.
Mr Chin was not in court on Wednesday due to miscommunication, as he had been told attendance was optional.
