It was tree planting day at Sembawang over the weekend.
The venue is at Blk 313. This was the location of Sree Narayana Mission in the past, and where Mr Lee Kuan Yew made the famous ‘Never Fear’ or ‘Mudflat to Metropolis’ speech in Sep 1965.
We planted Pink Mempat trees, a native species which bears flowers with small pink petals and a yellow centre that resemble the blossoming of cherry blossoms.
Looking forward to it blooming!

OYK looks forward to working more closely with Micron.:confused::tongue:

Micron is the first and largest foreign investor in Singapore. In Singapore, they make memory chips that are found in devices like our smart phones.
But now they are more - they are the first corporate community volunteer in Sembawang Central.
I have seen their employees attending and helping out at big community events, and asked if they could help run our Active Ageing Centres (AACs) on a sustained, perhaps weekly basis. They agreed, and will be rostering their employees to help at the AACs, including befriending and organising activities.
We launched this initiative during their Micron Family Day over the weekend.
I look forward to working more closely with Micron. And hope more corporates will do this as a meaningful CSR initiative!

I have received many emails and messages since Ministry of Health, Singapore announced its investigation into Cordlife Group Limited for their breaches that compromised the cord blood units under their custody. Many parents are understandably upset and distressed.
Investigations are still ongoing. For example, we are ascertaining the extent of temperature excursions for the other six affected tanks and the viability of the stored cord blood units within. This should take another six weeks or so. We are also at the same time working to uncover the reasons for the breaches. Nevertheless, we wanted to disclose publicly what we had found out first, which is why MOH put out a statement last week.
Other than further investigations, MOH has taken or will be taking the following steps, in the coming weeks.
First, we are working closely with Cordlife in the interim to address their shortcomings. We are closely supervising their cord blood banking activities and inventory management. We will ensure that Cordlife implements effective processes to adhere to requirements under the Healthcare Services (Cord Blood Banking Service) Regulations and prevent similar incidents from happening in future.
Second, in response to parents’ request for us to facilitate the transfer of the cord blood units banked with Cordlife to another cord blood bank, MOH has held discussions with the other cord blood banks, who are prepared to help. However, we advise that parents hold off these requests for now, until the full impact of the breaches are known in a few weeks. This is because if a unit is assessed to be unaffected, and Cordlife can strengthen its processes, it may be riskier to make a switch given the logistical complexity of making a physical transfer.
Third, beyond these immediate measures to protect the interest of the public and Cordlife’s clients, MOH will ensure that all relevant industry players learn from this episode.
Finally, depending on the findings of our investigations, we will follow up with the necessary regulatory and enforcement actions against Cordlife, given the severity of the breaches and the impact on clients. This is to ensure proper accountability, and to underscore the importance of industry players to adhere to the required regulatory standards.
We will continue to keep the parents updated.

OYK visited Macau again after many years.

Visited Macau again after many years. The last time I visited the Cotai area, it was still quite barren and now it’s built up, vibrant and well recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Met with Chief Executive Ho Iat-seng, who explained to me their economic strategy to grow beyond gaming, with a clear focus to develop the healthcare sector. Macau is positioning itself as a special zone within Greater China where more western medicines can be administered, drawing reference from approvals by regulatory regimes such as US, EU and Singapore. They are also growing as a Traditional Chinese Medicine manufacturing and R&D hub, leveraging the Hengqin Free Trade Zone.
Also symbolically exchanged our MOU on Health with Secretary of Social Affairs and Culture Elsie Ao Ieong U, renewed for the 4th time since 2008. Glad to reconnect again after the pandemic.

Glad to host UK Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Wes Streeting for lunch today.
Mr Streeting is visiting Singapore under the invitation of the Lee Kuan Yew Exchange Fellowship. We had a good discussion on #HealthierSG, health promotion and active ageing policies.
Happy to share some early Christmas cheers with him too!

A five-day carnival is ongoing at the F1 Pit Building. It is organised specially for COVID-19 Resilience Medal recipients and their families.
I visited the carnival today, and was greeted by many happy recipients and their families. I met nurses, patient care attendants, pharmacists, radiographers, facility maintenance personnel, swabbers etc. There is a shared emotion amongst us - after all we went through together.
This “by invitation only” is the finale of the National COVID-19 Award Ceremonies for the healthcare family. Thank you once again!

OYK seeks the public's support.

Today, we announced the Tripartite Framework for the Prevention of Abuse and Harassment in Healthcare. This will be adopted by the public healthcare clusters by June 2024.
The great majority of patients and their families show respect and gratitude towards healthcare workers. It is also common for patients and loved ones to be anxious, which is understandable. But a small subset of individuals engage in behaviour and language that is disrespectful and abusive to our healthcare workers.
With this Framework, public health institutions will take a stronger stance against abusers. It also provides a common definition of abuse, and a consistent set of standards to protect healthcare workers.
We seek the public's support to help give our healthcare workers a safe working environment.
