Sergio Romero: Man United sign Argentina goalkeeper

Manchester United have signed goalkeeper Sergio Romero on a free transfer from Sampdoria.

The 28-year-old Argentina international was available after leaving the Serie A side and will replace Spaniard Victor Valdes who has been told he can leave.

Romero played in the 2014 World Cup final defeat against Germany and won the 2008-09 Eredivisie title under Louis van Gaal at AZ Alkmaar.

"Sergio had a fantastic World Cup last summer in Brazil," said Van Gaal.

Romero becomes United's fifth signing of the summer. It follows the deals for full-back Matteo Darmian, midfielders Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin and winger Memphis Depay .

Romero has 62 caps for his country and will act as understudy to David De Gea, who is into his final year with the club.
Valdes was left out of the tour to the United States and Van Gaal said he will be sold after the manager claimed he "refused to play" in the reserves

ADM's ability was never in doubt. The ABUs and the haters will be quick to say he's a flop and United guilty of profligacy. This is the player United pursued when he played for Benfica. He chose REAL and he had no intention to play in the EPL even after his acrimonious departure from his Spanish master. PSG was his choice.

We are as much to blame for over bidding in the first place. After stellar performances for club and country, Di Maria was perfectly setup for a fall and 'fail' he did in the first season. We simply cannot judge a player of his quality in one season. Like may others before him, they will shine once the period of adjustment is over. It's a real pity he's leaving but I'm simply sick and tired about reading his dramatic exit from the club. Vamos Di Maria and good luck!!

Louis van Gaal: Man Utd boss plans to leave in 2017 for his wife

Louis van Gaal says he may leave Manchester United at the end of his three-year contract to keep a "promise" to his wife.
Asked about extending his contract at Old Trafford, the Dutchman told BBC Sport that he intended to "give it up" at the end of his contract in 2017.
"I promised that to my wife. We have not many years together any more. That is the reason," said the 63-year-old.
"I have done everything in my career as a manager."
Asked about the possibility of extending his stay, Van Gaal said he could not answer because his wife, Truus, "is very mad".
"I have to admit I have said to her, when I met her and our relationship seemed to be very good, that at 55 years I shall quit. I am still working and next week I am 64.
"The only wish was the Premier League. Now I am here.
"So. I have to go to Qatar to earn still more money? I don't think so. You have to enjoy also your life and your relationship with your wife."

Cristiano Ronaldo scored 118 goals in six seasons for Manchester United. Van Gaal says Cristiano Ronaldo is the type of player Manchester United need to compete with their rivals.
While the Dutchman would not be drawn on whether he thinks the Real Madrid star, 30, might return to United, he knows the Portuguese is regarded by United fans as the holy grail signing.
"I can imagine that. He is a fantastic player, I like him," he said.
When asked if he needed that kind of player to complete his squad, he said: "Of course."

He added: "I can give examples of champions: Bayern Munich, Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben; Chelsea, Eden Hazard and Willian; Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale; Barca, Neymar and Lionel Messi.
"Manchester United fans want us to compete with these teams."

Winger Angel Di Maria has been linked with a move to Paris St-Germain and did not join up with United for the start of their pre-season tour of the United States.
Van Gaal added: "We still need more speed in front and also more creativity. That is why I hope Di Maria shall stay. But we don't know that.
"Ashley Young and Juan Mata had fantastic seasons, with assists and goals but to win the Champions League you need speed also. That is why I think, maybe, we still have to buy a player with speed and creativity."
Ronaldo is just 10 behind Spanish striker Raul's record of 323 goals in 741 for the Bernabeu side.

Sergio Aguero was the Premier League's top scorer last season with 26 goals - five more than Tottenham's Harry Kane and 14 more than Rooney. Wayne Rooney was Manchester United's top scorer last season with 14 goals, but Van Gaal says that the 29-year-old must improve on that tally if he is plays, as planned, as a single striker.
Manchester City's Sergio Aguero scored 32 goals in 42 appearances for Manchester City last season.
"He has to score the amount of goals that Aguero gets," said Van Gaal. "He is our striker. He has to prove he can do it but I have full confidence that he shall.
"Rooney has said that he scores at the minimum 25 goals. So when I have a striker that scores 25, then I am better off."
Rooney last scored more than 25 goals for his club in 2011-12 when he found the net 35 times for United.

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been present on the US tour for the first time since his departure, but Van Gaal says that has not put added pressure on him.
"I want to talk with him. I talk with him very much times," said Van Gaal. "We eat together. He is sitting in the board, so he has to judge on me. I know that. But there is nobody in this world who can push me more than myself."

Whatever happened to the magnificent seven?

It is a question that Louis van Gaal will be pondering as he attempts to secure the game-changing ‘galactico’ who, according to the Manchester United manager, can be the difference between his team competing and winning over the remaining two years of his Old Trafford contract.

Think Thierry Henry, David Silva, Dennis Bergkamp, even Paul Scholes. Every great team in recent seasons has had its magician who can unlock doors when it truly matters.

Yet speaking in California at the weekend, Van Gaal made the rather blunt, but fair, observation that ‘Ashley Young is not Neymar’ when explaining the need for a stellar addition to his squad.

Van Gaal also bemoaned United’s lack of an Eden Hazard or a Sergio Aguero, not to mention the absence of a Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez or, much to the frustration of many in the upper echelons at the club, a Cristiano Ronaldo.

United, of course, had Ronaldo. They spotted him as a seventeen-year-old at Sporting Lisbon, tempted him to Manchester, nurtured him and put him on the road to superstardom before allowing Real Madrid to take him away for the princely sum of £80 million in the summer of 2009.

Six years on and United have still not come closing to replacing Ronaldo, despite the lofty ambitions of Van Gaal and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to pull off a deal that will rock the football world.

Throughout Old Trafford, there is a sense that ‘something big’ is being planned and United’s determination, perhaps even desperation, to park their tanks on the lawns of their rivals and blow them away has seen even Messi’s name whispered around the club.

United have money, bank vaults full of it, and their cash flow will become a tidal surge on Saturday when the £750m, 10-year kit deal with Adidas officially begins.

But United had serious money last summer and, despite investing a British record £59.7m in Angel di Maria, now find themselves having to negotiate a fire-damage rate with Paris Saint-Germain for the 27-year-old to be taking away from a place that has become a torture chamber rather than a Theatre of Dreams for the Argentine.

Di Maria was supposed to fill the Ronaldo void. He arrived from Real with star-status and a big reputation – big enough for him to be given the iconic number seven shirt which Ronaldo wore with distinction during his six years at United.
"I wanted to wear this shirt and do as much for the club as Ronaldo and the others could do,” Di Maria said on his arrival at United. "The club also wanted me to wear it, so I want to live up to it.”
In the brutal language of social media, however, Di Maria and the number seven shirt has been an epic fail.

Michael Owen, the free transfer who immediately followed Ronaldo in the shirt, also did little to add to its legend, while Antonio Valencia became so paranoid about the number seven bringing bad luck and poor form that he asked David Moyes to restore him to the number 25 shirt he had worn in his early seasons at the club.

United’s number seven has now become a burden, with the lineage of Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Ronaldo being disrupted by its most recent incumbents.

There is a view shared by many within the game that the United shirt is a ‘heavy’ one, with every number from one to eleven – and beyond in the era of squad numbers – being distinguished by one great or another down the years.

Cantona, Beckham and Ronaldo were energised and inspired by the number seven, but Di Maria allowed it weigh him down.
But there is no escape from a club’s history, which is why Van Gaal must get it right with whichever superstar he eventually chooses to illuminate his team and become United’s next magnificent seven.

We'd be better off fixing the central defense issue first as PSG showed time and again how vulnerable we are in the middle. Blind has no pace at all which leaves the clumsy Jones exposed. Bid for Stones and Otamendi. You need specialists in those areas. Man U will fail if we choose to do nothing about the central back issue.

Luke Shaw has won the battle to convince Louis van Gaal he can be United’s left back and the Manchester United boss is predicting a big season for the England player .

Twelve months ago on the Reds’ 2014 tour of America the newly installed Old Trafford manager was typically blunt and honest in his assessment of his £27m buy from Southampton.

Van Gaal claimed that the 19-year-old who had been with England’s squad at the World Cup was not fit enough for the role he had planned for him at United.

Shaw was immediately put on a personal fitness and training programme for him to be able to meet the Dutchman’s demands.

However, the teenager’s debut campaign at United was riddled with hamstring problems that reduced his season to 20 appearances.

But Shaw, who celebrated his 20th birthday the day before the Reds flew out here to the USA for their pre-season tour now has Van Gaal’s full backing to tackle the number three job and prove a long term replacement for Patrice Evra.

“Luke Shaw is a big talent,” says Van Gaal.

“He’s very young so it’s not so easy for him to come from Southampton to as big a club as Manchester United. But he has the benefit that he’s an Englishman. (Memphis) Depay is a Dutchman and it’s a different culture, a different rhythm to the game.

“So I think that it shall be the season of Luke Shaw, that I believe. I believe in him and he has to feel that and I hope he shall show it.

“But he’s 20-years-old. How many players of that age are playing in the Premier League?”

Clearly Shaw has worked out how to become a Van Gaal player and buy into the Dutchman’s philosophy in order to build his Old Trafford career.

So just what is it that makes up a ‘Van Gaal’ player.

“He has to know what he’s doing as a player as a team player and when you are a Louis van Gaal player then you don’t know only your function in your position but also the other functions in their positions and then you can help each other much more,” says Louis.

Monday did not bring good news for Manchester United over Sergio Ramos.

Reports came out that Real will not sell their defender, while a new deal could also be in the offing at the Bernabeu.

Following that, the Star write that United are furious.

A United source told the paper : “The club was led to believe he wanted to join them and was willing to leave Real Madrid.

“He was urged to make his feelings public to help speed up the transfer, but it now looks like he was playing a game all along.

“In the end it appears all he wanted was a new contract at Real and it looks like he’s going to get one as well.

“It’s not the sort of behaviour you’d expect from a player of his standing in the game. It’s like he’s betrayed United.”

And it is an unhappy double for centre-back news. Super Deporte claim that Nicolas Otamendi will be staying at Valencia this summer.

Better news on Spain comes from Pedro and Barcelona. The Mirror report that United are moving closer to completing a deal for the 27-year-old by meeting his £22m release clause.



The Daily Mail say United - and Newcastle - are considering a big offer for City's 16-year-old defender Cameron Humphreys. The youngster has impressed on the Blues' pre-season tour.

Reports in Italy suggest the Reds are looking to bring 15-year-old defender Luca Ercolani to Old Trafford. They are currently negotiating with club Forli.

Mata believes his scoring background means he will be a double figures provider to help take the burden off Rooney as the Reds look to boost a Premier League tally from last term that was their second worst in over two decades.

David De Gea: Louis Van Gaal says keeper saga 'not favourable'

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal admits David De Gea's transfer saga is causing a problem.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper wants to join Real Madrid but United have said they will not discuss a deal unless Real defender Sergio Ramos is included.

Real boss Rafael Benitez has said Ramos, 29, is staying at the Bernabeu.

"We have a situation that is not favourable for David De Gea, neither for us and neither for the club that, maybe, he wants to go," said Van Gaal.

Spain goalkeeper De Gea was replaced at half-time as United slipped to a 2-0 defeat by Paris St-Germain in Wednesday night's International Champions Cup game in Chicago.

Meanwhile, the Dutch boss admits he has "no idea" of the whereabouts of club-record signing Angel Di Maria.
Argentina midfielder Di Maria, a £59.7m buy from Real Madrid last summer, failed to return for pre-season training on Saturday as scheduled and it is understood talks are ongoing with PSG about a move to the French champions.

Asked if he knew where the 27-year-old was, Van Gaal said: "Maybe you know."
When the journalist said he did not, Van Gaal said: "I don't know either."
Speaking after the match, PSG coach Laurent Blanc said: "Manchester United and PSG are two big clubs and negotiations can be difficult, but we are close to the end."
Blanc added it was up to United to say whether his club has been given permission to speak to Di Maria.

Wednesday's defeat by the Ligue 1 side was convincing. Blaise Matuidi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic both profited from defensive mistakes to score two goals in seven first-half minutes. Phil Jones started alongside Daley Blind in central defence, with Luke Shaw and Matteo Darmian occupying the full-back positions.

It appears England international Jones's place for the Premier League opener against Tottenham on 8 August is most at risk as he was the only member of that starting defence not to be singled out by his manager after the match.
"I think that I shall play Shaw with Daley Blind in the left central position," said Van Gaal.
"The right central defensive position I have to consider.
"But I am very pleased with the performance of Matteo Darmian."

Not sure why LVG cannot see the weakness against PSG. Shaw played well and gave plenty of options upfront and now he wants to pair Shaw and Blind in the middle????!!!!!! He's blind to Blind's weakness. It's just not Jone's failure to cover the back. What's the rational of putting a shorter Shaw at the back Van Gaal?! My guess is hell play Darmian in the middle.

It is times like this that I wish Ferguson hadn't retired. He would have handled many things differently including DM's AWOL. Get tough with Di Maria and fine him heavily for his lack of professional ethics. He's still a United player until the deal is finalized. Read the riot act to the two Argentines before it's too late.

I think Smalling turned a corner last season. When Louis van Gaal moved him from the left side of central defence to the right, he looked a lot more assured. It had an instant effect on his passing, and everything else improved as a result. He seemed to grow as a player.

The same thing happened to me as a player. So I’d start with him, but discarding Jones would be a big dilemma for Van Gaal. He could see it as his challenge to turn Jones into the player many thought he would be. Perhaps the comparison with Duncan Edwards has been a big cross to bear for him.

I find him unconvincing. He plays like a stuntman – he’s so theatrical. But managers often want their defenders to play in a steadier fashion, and he seems like he’s trying too hard to prove he’s the player people thought he would be.

United's decision to fine the Argentina international two weeks' wages will complete an unhappy year for him at Old Trafford.

His move to the French champions is expected to be completed when he arrives in Paris from Buenos Aires for a medical and to sign his contract in the next 48 hours.

United are now set to press the button on a £22m deal for Barcelona's unsettled Pedro Rodriguez as a replacement.

They have taken a £15m hit on Di Maria who they bought from Real Madrid for a British record £59.7m last August.

Angel Di Maria struggled on and off the field in his time with United. Di Maria failed to settle at United, on or off the pitch, but PSG's former Chelsea defender David Luiz, a friend from their time at Benfica, says he is still a world-class talent.

Luiz said: "He is a great friend, a great player. Every single team he plays in, he makes the difference, helping on the defensive side also. He knows how to assist, to score goals.

"I played with him in Benfica. It's great to see how much he has improved, how he has become a fantastic player. It would be a pleasure to play with him again."

Manchester United have joined the chase for Everton defender John Stones.

And they are prepared to offer out-of-favour Jonny Evans as bait in a player-plus-cash deal to try to beat off competition from Chelsea and Manchester City.

United boss Louis van Gaal, who has missed out on long-term target Sergio Ramos from Real Madrid, is still in the market for a new centre-half.

They have yet to make a formal approach but have made discreet enquiries about Stones, 21, as the bidding war hots up. Chelsea have already had two offers turned down but are confident that the England prospect wants to move to *Stamford Bridge.

They went in with £20million, had another bid of £26m rejected and are preparing a third offer.

City are also watching closely, even though Everton are adamant they have no intention of selling their prize asset.

United are also spending big and they all regard Stones as the best young English defensive prospect in the top flight.

The Goodison Park outfit will turn their attention to Swansea’s Ashley Williams if they do lose Stones.

Angel Di Maria’s £44m move from United to Paris Saint-Germain, meanwhile, is set to be confirmed. That will spark the arrival of Barcelona’s Pedro.

The Reds have confirmed a deal is close to take the British record £59.7m signing to PSG.

Louis van Gaal has expressed doubt over the keeper's Man Utd future and Real Madrid are standing firm.

Manchester United are facing a dilemma over what to do with David De Gea just a week before the start of the new season.

United have maintained throughout the protracted transfer wrangle with Real Madrid that only a deal for Sergio Ramos would convince them to release De Gea. But on Thursday, Spanish newspaper Marca, who have strong links with Real Madrid, reported Ramos has agreed a new five-year deal at the Bernabeu.

The news came just hours after United manager Louis van Gaal suggested De Gea is not in the right frame of mind to start the season as his first-choice goalkeeper.

Following the 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in Chicago, during which De Gea was partly culpable for the first goal, the Dutchman said De Gea’s situation ‘is not favourable’ to any of the involved parties.

Real coach Rafa Benitez refused to directly address the development but believes it is “early days” in the transfer window and that “little by little things will fall into place”.

He added: “If someone else comes along then we will welcome them but they have to be better than what we have.”

It leaves Van Gaal and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward with a decision to make just days before their Premier League opener with Tottenham at Old Trafford on August 8.

Woodward has worked with Van Gaal for a year. They can either reaffirm their stance that De Gea will not be allowed to sign for Real Madrid this summer unless Ramos moves in the opposite direction – something that now looks highly unlikely.

Or they can admit defeat and agree a deal with the Spanish side rather than lose the 24-year-old for nothing when his contract expires in 12 months.

United signed Argentinian goalkeeper Sergio Romero on a free transfer on Monday and also have 22-year-old Sam Johnstone – who played more minutes than any other goalkeeper on the tour of the United States – and Anders Lindegaard, who is currently sidelined with a groin injury, waiting in the wings.

But it remains likely they will move for another goalkeeper if De Gea leaves before the transfer deadline.

It doesn't bode well for talented Argentinians who intend to ply their trade in Europe. The club should just move on beyond DM and DG. The sooner they rid of DG, the better.

Lessons learned.

1. Stop being a bitch to players from the elite clubs especially REAL Madrid. The players and the agents from REAL are mercenaries.

2.Have a look at British born talents and take it from there.

3.Give the young potential talents a chance. Pereira and Januzaj may not be in the same class as Sergi Roberto or Halilovic but given the chance, I'm sure they'll develop into useful players.
