Mendes pushing reluctant De Gea to sign new Man Utd deal

David de Gea is reluctant to commit to a new Manchester United deal, despite the insistence of Jorge Mendes. De Gea, off contract in June, still has his heart set on joining Real Madrid.AS says Mendes has said that regardless of his future intentions, De Gea should renew with United and force himself back into Louis van Gaal's plans. Despite knowing that not playing would leave him out of the Spain squad, as Vicente del Bosque said on Wednesday, De Gea is disappointed with the Premier League side. His head says to renew, but his feelings are impeding that from happening.

The way forward to deal with DG is to show him the evidence that the club did their level best to push the transfer through. Offer him an extension with a release clause of the club's last valuation of 35 million pounds ie. if he still chooses to leave for REAL at the end of the season. Should he decide to leave for any other club, then the release clause would be set at 50 million pounds.

A genuine gesture of goodwill at this point will do a lot of good for the club. Pay him for what he's worth and move on. DG is lucky that SAF is not in charge. SAF once said that if a player wants to leave, he will gladly show him the door.:D

It's about time for the club's management to meet and decide on how best to handle the media circus. LVG should be made to understand that the media is not interested in his 'honest' opinion and best that he refrain from name dropping to avoid a frenzy. In short, don't say anything more than you should or they'll chew you and spit you out.

Sir Alex Ferguson: Man Utd boss says discipline may have lost titles

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has said his tough approach with players may have cost the club silverware during his time there.

Roy Keane, Jaap Stam, David Beckham and Ruud van Nistelrooy were among the high-profile players who fell out with Ferguson during his 26 years in charge.

The Scot won 38 trophies, including 13 league titles, two Champions Leagues, five FA Cups and four League Cups.

The 73-year-old said: "I place discipline above all else."

Writing in his new book Leading, Ferguson added: "It might have cost us several titles. If I had to repeat things I'd do it precisely the same." Ferguson's fall-outs
The most high-profile fall-out came when Ferguson kicked a boot at former England midfielder Beckham during a dressing-room bust-up after an FA Cup defeat by Arsenal in 2003.

It left Beckham, 40, with an injury above his left eye and the former LA Galaxy player left for Real Madrid later that year. United went three years before winning the Premier League title again after his departure.

Former Republic of Ireland international midfielder Keane, 44, left Old Trafford in September 2005 after criticising team-mates in an interview for MUTV as Chelsea won the title that season.

Centre-back Stam, 43, was sold to Lazio in August 2001 after writing in his autobiography that Ferguson "tapped him up" while the former Netherlands international was still at PSV Eindhoven. Ferguson said his decision to sell Stam was based purely on footballing matters.

Van Nistelrooy and Ferguson fell out after the 39-year-old former Netherlands striker was on the bench for the Carling Cup final in 2006. A successful period for United followed, winning three consecutive league titles and the Champions League in 2008.

Manchester United beat Liverpool 4-2 in a less that friendly Legends match at the Friends Arena in Stockholm on Thursday. Liverpool's Robbie Fowler kicked out at United's Bojan Djordjic in the first half, and Jason McAteer, playing at right back, was run ragged by Jesper Blomqvist, cynically tripping the man who famously made way for Teddy Sheringham in the 1999 Champions League Final, on a number of occasions, eventually collecting a yellow card.

Vladimir Smicer opened the scoring for Liverpool before United scored four through Karel Poborsky, Dwight Yorke, Djordjic and Blomqvist; David Thompson then scored a consolation for the Anfield outfit late on.

Exclusive: Manchester United could get Marco Reus in exchange for Adnan Januzaj
A SWAP deal involving Marco Reus and Adnan Januzaj is on the cards for Manchester United in next summer's transfer window

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Reus was one of the top targets on United's wish list of marquee signings in the window which has just closed.

And Old Trafford winger Januzaj, 20, has just joined the Bundesliga club on loan for the current season.

Officially, Januzaj is in Germany to further his experience and is due to return to United next summer.

SWAP: Reus could be heading to Old Trafford
reus-463228.jpg

But if the Belgium attacker impresses with the German side, Dortmund may be prepared to discuss an exchange deal.

The £60million-rated Reus missed Germany's triumphant World Cup campaign last summer due to an ankle injury picked up in a warm-up game.

But United will face competition for Reus, 26, who is currently sidelined with a broken toe.

He has regularly been linked with Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea.

And Real Madrid are also eyeing Reus' situation.

Manchester United new boy Anthony Martial bidding to make first France start in the friendly against Serbia

-Manchester United shelled out £36m to sign teenage striker Anthony Martial from Monaco earlier this week
-The deal could rise to £58m in performance-based add-ons
-Martial is currently with the senior France squad for their friendlies against Portugal and Serbia ahead of Euro 2016
-He made his debut as a substitute against Portugal and is now bidding to start the Serbia game

Manchester United new boy Anthony Martial was put through his paces alongside his France team-mates as they prepared for the international friendly match against Serbia on Monday.

France are not involved in the qualification rounds for the European Championship next year owing to their bye as the host nation and are therefore just playing friendlies instead.

Martial, who signed for United in a £36m deal from Monaco earlier this week, made his international debut against Portugal as a substitute on Friday.

Martial is currently training with the senior France squad for their matches against Portugal and Serbia in the lead-up to Euro 2016
Now, the 19-year-old is bidding to suitably impress Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps to let him be involved in the Serbia clash from the start.

Indeed, Martial's position as the most expensive teenage player in football history, brings with it a slew of grand expectations.

France's forward Anthony Martial takes part in a training session, on September 5, 2015 at the stadium in Bordeaux, ahead of the Euro 2016 friendly football match between France and Serbia on September 7.

Dorian told The Sun: 'Anthony has all the qualities needed to be Manchester United and France captain.
'My little brother isn't someone who will shout at all the players around him. He doesn't need to because he speaks with his incredible skills.

Dorian added: 'Anthony is a talisman and has the ego and personality on the pitch to be a captain of Manchester United and even France. Of course, not right now — because he is just 19 — but definitely in the future. He comes from a club that has produced two France captains (Laurent Blanc and Patric Evra).'

France coach Didier Deschamps (centre) has brought Martial into the senior fold without hesitation and tips him for a bright future
Martial started his career at Lyon, making his professional bow in December 2012, before joining Monaco the following summer.
He scored eight goals in 31 Ligue 1 appearances for Monaco last season, demonstrating flashes of his precocious talent.

United's sizable investment in Martial has been met with raised eyebrows by some and murmurs of good business by others who believe they have tied a potential world-beater down to his best years.

Whether Martial manages to make good on his price tag or succumbs to it, remains uncertain. What is for sure, though, is that a friendly between France and Serbia has never been so anticipated.

RIP indeed. Had to look see in BBC archives :o

Ralph Milne: Dundee United legend dies at the age of 54

Former Dundee United and Manchester United winger Ralph Milne has died at the age of 54.

He had been receiving treatment in hospital for liver problems.

Milne helped Dundee United win the league championship in 1983, scoring the first goal in a 2-1 win over city rivals Dundee that sealed the title.
"Ralph can now take his seat in the main stand on high alongside other departed club legends," Dundee United said in a statement.
Inducted into Dundee United's hall of fame in 2009, he scored 75 goals in 286 appearances for the Tangerines.
After moving south, he played for Charlton Athletic and Bristol City before a move to Manchester United in 1988.

He made 30 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring three goals.

Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson said: "This is a very sad day. Ralph's skill and flair epitomised the Dundee United teams he graced and he was undoubtedly one of the finest footballers to hail from the city of Dundee.
"He remains Dundee United's top goalscorer in Europe and I am grateful to have watched him in his prime many times during those fantastic years he starred for United.
"It was a privilege to have known Ralph and he will be remembered fondly and missed sadly by Arabs everywhere."

Paris Saint-Germain made a stunning £110m mega bid to lure Man Utd striker target Ronaldo

Manchester United were linked with a move for the Real Madrid star over the summer, although a deal failed to materialise.

And according to reports in Brazil, the Premier League giants were not the only European super-power in for the Portuguese.

News outlet Globo Esporte suggest PSG offered a staggering £110million for the Ballon D'Or winner's services.

However, the bid is understood to have been instantly knocked back by the La Liga club who were not willing to lose their star man.

If the deal had been completed it would have resulted in Ronaldo reclaiming his title as the most expensive player in world football.

Although, the French club are expected to reignite their interest and return with another bid next summer.

David de Gea is set to prove his readiness to return to action for Manchester United against Liverpool this weekend by making his first appearance of the season in Spain’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Macedonia on Tuesday.

De Gea, 24, has been exiled to the stands by United manager Louis van Gaal since the start of the campaign due to the Dutchman’s claim that the goalkeeper was too distracted by his on-off transfer to Real Madrid to play at Old Trafford.

With De Gea’s £29million transfer to the Bernabeu collapsing last Monday, Van Gaal must now find a way to restore to the unsettled goalkeeper to the United team following Sergio Romero’s unconvincing performance during the 2-1 defeat against Swansea eight days ago.

But Van Gaal could be given a boost by Spain manager Vicente del Bosque following his admission that De Gea could get his first ninety minute of the season against Macedonia in Skopje.

“He (De Gea) is in condition to play,” Del Bosque said. “We have talked with him and he is fine. I do not know if he will play or not, but he is OK and that’s all I wanted to know.

“He is a mature guy and is ready to play without suffering any burden of what happened. I have talked to him. I did not want to give him any advice because many people have already done it.

“I just asked whether he was in condition to play and he told me yes. Nothing else. We have a big squad and we must rotate it.”
Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas played for Spain in their 2-0 home victory against Slovakia on Saturday.

But Del Bosque, who last week warned De Gea that he risked missing out on Euro 2016 if he failed to overcome the disappointment of his failed move to Real, admitted he is keen to rotate his squad against Macedonia.
“There are just a few hours to rest between the games and it’s normal to make some changes,” Del Bosque said. “There is little difference between those who played (against Slovakia) and those who didn’t play and it is important to use the entire squad.”

Man Utd news: Wayne Rooney buries hatchet with 'greatest manager of all time' Sir Alex Ferguson

United captain makes comments after Ferguson praised Rooney ahead of the striker equalling Sir Bobby Charlton’s England goalscoring record

By Matt Law10:30PM BST 07 Sep 2015 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...ey-buries-hatchet-with-Sir-Alex-Ferguson.html

Wayne Rooney has buried the hatchet with Sir Alex Ferguson by describing the Manchester United legend as “the greatest manager of all time” as he stands on the brink of making England history.

Former United manager Ferguson spoke fondly of Rooney’s ability ahead of the striker equalling Sir Bobby Charlton’s England goalscoring record against San Marino.

Ferguson and Rooney's relationship fluctuated at United. With goal number 50 and the outright record now in his sights against Switzerland at Wembley on Tuesday night, Rooney has stated his respect for Ferguson.
The relationship between the two men broke down in Ferguson’s final season in charge at Old Trafford, when Rooney was played out of position to accommodate Robin van Persie.

Rooney’s fall-out with Ferguson came to a head when he was dropped for a Champions League tie against Real Madrid and told the Scotsman that his future lay away from United. Ferguson made that exchange public before his final game in charge of United, but the pair now appear to have made their peace.

“I don't know if anyone knows how things ended (between us),” said Rooney. “We had differences (of opinion). That's normal. Ask Roy (Hodgson), he's had differences with other players. That's part of football. I'm not the only person who had differences with Sir Alex Ferguson, but I can still sit here and say he was the greatest manager of all time.

“I still see Sir Alex quite a bit at games and he travels away to European games with us. It's not that we don't like each other. We just had differences. That's normal.”

Rooney’s attitude towards Ferguson is markedly different to that of Roy Keane, who does not speak to his former manager and accused him of “lies, basic lies” within his book. David Beckham, though, repaired his relationship with the 73-year-old.

While Keane and Beckham both left United, Rooney remained at Old Trafford following Ferguson’s decision to retire. The 29-year-old is captain for club and country, and believes it will be the England manager and not him who decides when his international career is over.

Rooney will win his 107th England cap against Switzerland and hopes to surpass 50 goals for his country. He believes he can play in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, following next summer’s European Championships, and is then prepared to see whether he still has a key role to play.

“I'm sure, when that time comes, I'll have to listen to my body,” said Rooney. “I said the other night, I feel I'm capable of going to Russia. After that, it may be a realistic time to see how I feel and if I feel it's not right for England or myself, I'll have a decision to make. Or the manager would have a decision to make.

“If I feel I can carry on, I'll try. But I won't be one to say I'm not available for selection. I'm sure it'll probably be the manager's choice more than mine. It's a huge honour to play for England. If the manager feels I can't do it…I imagine it'll be difficult to say I'm ready not to play. If the manager says he doesn't feel I'm in his plans for the next tournament (after Russia), it's probably better I don't play in the qualifying games because I won't be going to the tournament.
“I feel I've got still quite a lot of games left to play for England. If I was sat here saying ‘I just want to get 50 goals’ then I'd be lying. I'd be disappointed if I ended my England career on 50 goals. I want to kick on and try to score as many goals as I can.

“I've still got plenty of games to do that. Hopefully by the time I finish playing, it will be more goals than 50.”
Rooney’s United team-mate Michael Carrick was forced to withdraw from the England squad with a calf injury on Monday, forcing Hodgson to change his plans for the Switzerland game.

Midfielder Carrick has only played twice for England since October 2013, but Hodgson still hopes the 34-year-old will be fit to be part of his Euro 2016 squad.

“There's so much water to pass under the bridge, it's not the time to make a judgement (on whether he will be fit for the Euros),” said Hodgson. “He might get over this very quickly and go on to play a big part for United and hardly miss a game. I hope it won't be a recurring injury, but I don't know. It's a question for United and Michael, not for me.”

England have confirmed they will play a friendly against Spain at Rico Perez Stadium in Alicante on Friday November 13. The Football Association have also confirmed that England will use the Auberge du Je de Paume hotel in Chantilly and the Chantilly FC training ground during Euro 2016.

Hodgson will speak with the FA about his preparations for the tournament and could also talk to the Premier League about him getting access to his players in the New Year and attempting to make sure they are not taken on long post-season tours by their clubs. “After the draw in France, that’s the moment to go into more detail about this,” said Hodgson. “What do we need in those five months between December to May?”

Keeper De Gea will hold clear-the-air talks with manager Van Gaal at the Reds' training ground on Wednesday, for the first time since the collapse of his deadline-day move to Real Madrid last week.

And, according to club insiders, Van Gaal is ready to make De Gea as his first-choice again - with the Spaniard in line to return at home to arch-rivals Liverpool on Saturday evening.

The Dutchman refused to pick De Gea while his future remained unresolved, so summer signing Sergio Romero has started in goal for all six of United's games this season.

But with De Gea now remaining at the club, following the cock-up over paperwork which thwarted his move to the Bernabeu, the 24-year-old is set to be recalled.

Reuters / Jason CairnduffSergio Romero lies injuredSub standard: Romero was starting in De Gea's absence - but has made costly errors. Although Van Gaal likes his players to build up their match fitness in reserve games before recalling them to the first-team, it is now understood that policy does not apply to goalkeepers.

De Gea has continued to train with the squad, despite Van Gaal's decision not to select him — he felt the player had lost his focus as the saga over his future rumbled on.

Van Gaal will sit down with De Gea - who saw his first competitive action of the season on Tuesday in Spain's 1-0 Euro 2016 qualifying win over Macedonia - after training on Wednesday to discuss the fall-out from his botched switch to Real, and will assess whether he is ready to start at the weekend.

Prior to the international break, Van Gaal admitted he had not seen enough from Romero to convince him the Argentina No 1 - who played for him previously at Dutch club AZ Alkmaar — can cope with the unique physical demands of English football.

Romero was beaten at his near-post for Swansea's opener in United's 2-1 defeat in their last Premier League game and has since acknowledged he is under pressure to keep his place now De Gea is staying put.

Manchester United's plans for digital domination

By Matthew Wall
Technology of Business editor, BBC News http://www.bbc.com/news/business-34172775
8 September 2015

Football, for most Manchester United fans, is a virtual experience.

The club claims it has 659 million supporters around the world - a figure disputed by some - but the vast majority will never step inside the famed Old Trafford stadium.

That's because most of them (85%) live in developing economies around the world, with more than half in Asia, the club says.
So how do you make sure these potentially lucrative supporters stay loyal and have a rewarding and engaging fan experience?
That's the question the club hopes to answer through its recently-announced tie-up with Indian "digital transformation partner", HCL Technologies.

Engagement
"What our fans have been interested in hasn't changed significantly over 100 years," says Man Utd's group managing director, Richard Arnold.
"It's about quality of execution - the right content to the right fans at the right time, in the right language, in the right technology format, through the right medium."

What that means in practice, however, is a little vague at this stage.
Man Utd already "engages digitally" with 100 million fans, Mr Arnold says.

It has nearly six million Twitter followers and more than 66 million "likes" on its Facebook page, plus more than 100,000 users of its app, not to mention an undisclosed number of viewers of its digital cable channel, MUTV.

Manchester United in numbers
659m approximate global fanbase
100m fans interacting digitally
66m Facebook likes
6m Twitter followers
£2bn club value

So how do you extend that engagement to the rest of the fanbase?
Krishnan Chatterjee, head of marketing at HCL's digital business division, says that what you don't do is try to build a one-size-fits-all app for such a diverse audience.

"How many apps could we build? It could be as low as four or five, or as many as 100 - it's hard to say," he tells the BBC.
And social media content has to be tailored to suit the cultural differences - not to mention the available internet speeds - of fans in different countries, he adds.

The key, says Mr Chatterjee, is keeping fans engaged between matches, given that 95% of them will never enter the stadium.
This could mean enabling team sponsors to run competitions and offer prizes, as well as offering the usual game and player stats, and "build your own team" functionality.

Fans might be able to pit themselves against their favourite players
In another example, he says all the data being collected from the players - their fitness levels and running speed - could be incorporated into apps for wearable devices, allowing fans to test their own fitness against that of their favourite players.
"But if I could imagine how a fan will be interacting with the club in five years time then I've already failed," Mr Chatterjee concludes.
"We're on an exciting journey, so let's get a lot of ideas on the table and do things no other club has ever done."
The interaction doesn't always have to be very hi-tech, however.

Mr Arnold says that simply giving fans the ability to wish players happy birthday on social media "turned out to be one of the most engaging pieces of content you can do".

Technical challenges
HCL will be setting up a "United Xperience Lab" at the Man Utd's Old Trafford stadium, where it will "explore revolutionary ways in which the club uses technology to create a unified fan experience for supporters...", according to the jargon-filled press release.
The technical challenge of providing that "unified experience" for millions of fans across 200 countries and in 27 languages is "mind boggling", Mr Arnold admits.

Man Utd player Ashley Young takes a selfie of his fellow players, HCL boss Anant Gupta (third right)Image copyrightManchester United
Young.jpg

So HCL's chief executive Anant Gupta says the first task is "about creating a scalable, robust, industrialised platform…". The content will come as a result of focus groups and feedback from fans, according to HCL, but video is likely to play a big part.
The difficulty of providing streaming video to mobile devices of varying quality, across multiple networks of varying speeds and capacities, is formidable, believes Merrick Kingston, principal analyst at media and technology consultancy, IHS.

"It sounds boring to talk about the nuts and bolts of video, but online distribution of high-quality streaming video is very expensive," he says, "and optimising your system to enable bitrates that can adapt to different network conditions in different countries is a huge undertaking."
So is HCL up to the task?
Man Utd were certainly keen to stress HCL's financial strength, trumpeting its $1bn (£655m) net profit figure on $6bn of revenue, perhaps reflecting anxiety that many people in the sports business world may not have heard of the IT services company.

These Thai Man Utd fans illustrate how important mobile devices have become
MUthai.jpg

HCL operates in 31 countries across the globe, and specialises in forming partnerships with other IT companies, such as Microsoft, Cisco, SAP, Hewlett-Packard and EMC.

That said, Mr Kingston admits: "They're not the type of firm I'd have expected to see in this type of deal."

Commercial potential
Of course, the main reason for deeper digital engagement with fans is to make more money for the club.
More interaction means greater advertising and merchandising opportunities among its largely young and affluent fanbase.
Mr Arnold says: "There's a virtuous circle that comes from enhanced engagement, which translates into more and deeper fan activation, which translates into financial success, which allows us to invest on the pitch, which gives us success.

"And that leads you right back in the circle to the work we're doing engaging with those fans and driving it on."
And Man Utd isn't alone in spotting this potential digital dividend.

In July, arch rival Manchester City announced a tie-up with German software giant SAP, as part of a drive to share match-day and training data with fans, and generally enhance interaction.
And last week Chelsea announced a deal with Wipro, another Indian IT services company, citing reasons similar to those given by Man Utd.

Christian Purslow, Chelsea's managing director, said: "We plan on using this partnership to truly enhance the fan experience for millions of Chelsea supporters worldwide." Will 50 million of those fans in India, a tie-up with an Indian IT company would seem to make commercial sense.

But will these clubs succeed in providing content their fans want to see and pay for?
Let the digital games begin.

Man Utd v Liverpool: Loser under pressure, says Mark Lawrenson

By Chris Bevan
BBC Sport

Manchester United v Liverpool
Venue: Old Trafford Date: Saturday 12 September Kick-off: 17:30 BST

Saturday's clash between Manchester United and Liverpool is a game neither manager can afford to lose, says former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson.

Lawrenson feels United boss Louis van Gaal and Liverpool's Brendan Rodgers are already under growing pressure.
"Whatever happens at Old Trafford, there will be an over-reaction concerning the beaten team," he said.
"Defeat would not actually be a crisis, but the loser would find himself under that kind of scrutiny."

United and Liverpool both have seven points from their first four Premier League matches, and both lost their last game before the international break.

Liverpool were beaten 3-0 at home by West Ham while United lost 2-1 at Swansea.
United have lost fear factor

Van Gaal took United to fourth place in his first season in charge at Old Trafford
"Losing at Swansea was United's first defeat of the season but people are now questioning Van Gaal's signings and his style of play," BBC football pundit Lawrenson added.
"He has probably made them more difficult to beat but the problem is they have lost their attacking flair.
"That is what scares teams, and they don't have it at the moment. Regardless of the start Van Gaal has made, he is already under pressure.
"It is about standards. We are talking about United here, who are used to dominating games in the Champions League as well as the Premier League. Looking at them at the moment, I don't think they will be - their team is a bit like a patchwork quilt.

"The David De Gea deal is a boost and something I thought might happen after he stayed on transfer deadline day, but United still have problems at the back.
"Van Gaal has paired Chris Smalling, who has improved a lot this season and taken on the responsibility of leading the defence, with Daley Blind, who reads the game extremely well.
"But if you are a top striker in the Premier League, and you are up against Smalling and Blind then you must be thinking you are going to score. They are not exactly Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, or Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister are they?

Rodgers under threat - again. Rodgers
has steered Liverpool to seventh, second and sixth in his three seasons in charge at Anfield
Rodgers' position has been in doubt before and defeat would bring more speculation about his future.

"Saturday could be a crossroads game for Brendan," added Lawrenson.
"Like United, Liverpool have made a good start in terms of results but their performances have been less convincing.
"They looked all right when they were sat on seven points from three games before they played West Ham but, all of a sudden, that game left a lot of people saying they are not sure about him again.
"He was always living on something of a knife edge after what happened last season, but I did not think that would happen after one defeat.
"The fans are becoming a little apathetic, which will not help his cause. I have never seen Anfield empty as early before the end of the game as it was during that defeat by West Ham."

Can Martial increase United's threat?

Martial made his senior international debut for France last week
After scoring three goals in their first four league games, United moved to bolster their attack before the transfer window closed by spending £36m on 19-year-old Monaco forward Anthony Martial, a world-record fee for a teenager.

Martial, who has completed 90 minutes just seven times in senior football, scored 15 goals in 74 appearances for Monaco.

"It is massive money for someone who is going to take a long time to mature," added Lawrenson.
"Martial has got tremendous potential but he has barely played. If he starts every week for United, what is that saying? That there is no-one else."
United's other big forward signing over the summer saw 21-year-old Memphis Depay arrive for £31m from PSV Eindhoven in June.
"Memphis is a bit older and a bit further along in his development than Martial," Lawrenson said.
"But United's two big signings in attack are both kids, who are talented but are going to be hit and miss by virtue of the fact they are young and inexperienced."

Liverpool need to get the best out of Benteke

Liverpool also spent heavily on new forwards over the summer, including £29m for Roberto Firmino and £32.5m for Christian Benteke.

"The difference between Benteke and the forwards that United have brought in is that he is a proven Premier League goalscorer, while United do not know what they are getting," said Lawrenson.
"They know Benteke will score but Liverpool's problem is getting the best out of him. Football is really simple sometimes - give your striker the service and he will get you the goals.
"With Benteke, the way to do that is to deliver crosses into the box, but that is hard when Liverpool lack width in their attack.
"That was one of their big problems against West Ham. Instead they were going down the middle all the time and found it really difficult.
"Using former Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling as an example, what he has done since joining Manchester City is make the pitch wider for the rest of their attacking players.
"What Liverpool are doing this season is making the pitch narrower, and relying on their full-backs for width rather than their forwards. It has not worked for them so far."

TEAM NEWS

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says he is yet to decide whether he will recall David De Gea after the goalkeeper signed a new contract.

New £36m signing Anthony Martial could be involved, while midfielder Michael Carrick has overcome a calf injury.
Philippe Coutinho is suspended for Liverpool, while Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana could miss out again with foot and thigh injuries respectively.

Daniel Sturridge is back in training but is not yet ready to play matches.
The striker hasn't featured since he underwent hip surgery in May.

MOTD COMMENTATOR'S NOTES

Steve Wilson: "Wayne Rooney may feel that a pressure has been lifted from his shoulders, but club managers rarely get that luxury and Messrs Van Gaal and Rodgers were both under scrutiny following Premier League defeats before the international break.

"Liverpool's was the more surprising. West Ham made them look very ordinary at Anfield - or 'bang average' as Harry Redknapp put it. Two goals in four games, one worldie and one off-side, is hardly the stuff of legend.
"Manchester United aren't scoring freely either, and it's interesting to note that whilst Wayne Rooney's last 10 international goals have come in 12 games, his last 10 club goals have come in 30."

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal on new signing Anthony Martial: "I imagine the fans think '£50m, he has to score.' No, he is 19 and he has to adapt.
"You could see how Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao struggled. The pressure at United is much higher than at another club, so we mustn't give him too much pressure.
"But he must adapt to our culture and philosophy and that is difficult enough."

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers: "United is a huge club and will always be under scrutiny. The intensity of this fixture is still there. The players will feel it.
"We've had two tough games away from home and performed well in terms of our organisation. We also want to be really creative.
"This is the biggest derby game in the history of this league. Winning a game like this can give you psychological boost."

LAWRO'S PREDICTION

Apart from a spell of about 25 minutes against Newcastle, Manchester United have not really prised open teams too often this season. It was the same with Liverpool last time out against West Ham. So I am expecting this to be a very tight game, and I am also expecting it to end up as another draw.

Anthony Martial set for first Manchester United start against PSV after stunning debut in win over Liverpool

22:30, 13 SEPTEMBER 2015 http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/anthony-martial-set-first-manchester-6436902

The French teenager dazzled Old Trafford on Saturday and with Wayne Rooney ruled out of the Champions League clash, Martial is set to get the nod

Anthony Martial is set for his first Manchester United start on Tuesday following his stunning goalscoring debut.

Martial, a £36million signing from Monaco, lit up Old Trafford with a fine solo goal after coming off the bench in United’s 3-1 win over Liverpool.

With skipper Wayne Rooney ruled out of Tuesday’s Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven with a tight hamstring, Martial is set to step in.

Louis van Gaal will assess Martial in training today before making a decision, but it is increasingly likely the 19-year-old will lead United’s attack.

“You will have to wait and see how the players recover,” said van Gaal. “That is the most important thing.

“Three days – because it was an important match – for everybody, also with the pressure, for the result against Liverpool.

“So they need three days to recover. Then I shall decide.”

Marouane Fellaini led United’s attack against Liverpool in the absence of Rooney, but Martial has proved to van Gaal he is ready to start.

Martial cost United an initial £36million, but that figure could ultimately rise to £58m with the completion of performance-related clauses.

United midfielder Michael Carrick praised Martial and said: “It doesn’t get any better than that, coming on and scoring against Liverpool.

“I thought the finish was terrific, how he just slotted it home. He was so calm and composed and you can’t ask for a better start.”

With Rooney out, Martial is United’s only recognised striker, after van Gaal sold Robin van Persie, Radamel Falcao and Javier Hernandez this summer.

Adnan Januzaj has gone on a season-long loan to Borussia Dortmund, while young striker James Wilson is set to be loaned to a Championship side.

Cherry penalty by Herrera on sat? :p

ANDER HERRERA MAKES PENALTY REVELATION

Ander Herrera revealed after the game to MUTV that his penalty in the 3-1 win over Liverpool was the first he has ever taken in a competitive match.

The Spanish midfielder showed few nerves when hammering his spot-kick past Simon Mignolet to double Manchester United's lead after he was fouled by Joe Gomez inside the box. However, he was only on spot-kick duty because of Juan Mata's substitution and Wayne Rooney's injury so he was actually a novice in this area.

When asked if he had taken one before, he replied: "Never, never. But the manager last season gave me the confidence. He told me I had the quality to take penalties and I have practiced every week. And, today, when I received the penalty, I thought the number-one taker isn’t on the pitch, I’m the second taker so I’m happy for that. But, next time, if the number-one taker is on the pitch I won’t be taking it.

"I tried [put some force behind it] because I knew in advance that [Simon] Mignolet is a big keeper, very tall and very elastic. I tried to hit it as hard as possible and it was a good goal but the most important thing was the win."

Herrera was clearly delighted to experience another fabulous occasion at Old Trafford.

"It’s not only a victory," he said. "It’s a very special day for us and our fans. When I arrived here, I realised what this game means for our fans. I have played three games against them and beat them in every game so I am very happy."
