Manchester United 2015-2016

Assessment and round-up of latest misses incl Pedro

Who next for Manchester United after Chelsea agree Pedro deal?

http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/33991189

_85072381_3pic.jpg

Manchester United's lengthy pursuit of Barcelona's Pedro has ended with the Spain star heading to Chelsea in a £21m deal.
The 28-year-old who has won the Champions League three times with Barcelona looked destined for Old Trafford when United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward headed out to Spain in the hope of finalising a deal.

Instead, with Chelsea making their move and United manager Louis van Gaal reportedly having misgivings about the transfer, Pedro flew into London to sign for Chelsea. United coveted Pedro for a lengthy period - so where do they go now after seeing the gifted product of Barcelona's La Masia academy prepare to sign in at Stamford Bridge.

Have United lost some pulling power?
United are no strangers to high profile transfers having paid more than £30m for Juan Mata in 2014 and Dimitar Berbatov in 2008
Manchester United like to label themselves as the biggest club in the world - this does not seem to be a view shared by the many elite players in the current era.

Under Sir Alex Ferguson, ably assisted by David Gill, United had an excellent success rate in pulling off the big deals when they needed them. There were occasional misses, such as when United could not close a deal for Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho, but plenty of hits too.

Since Ferguson's departure, and Gill's replacement with Woodward, United's interest is no guarantee of getting a deal over the line. Pedro may not have actually been a priority signing but it will be a blow to United's giant ego and profile that it will be perceived he has snubbed them for Premier League rivals Chelsea - a fate they appear likely to suffer even more starkly if long-time defensive target Nicolas Otamendi moves from Valencia to Manchester City as expected.

It also appears United were the collateral damage for Premier League champions Chelsea's painful start to the season, the instant reaction to Sunday's 3-0 loss at Manchester City being the deal to sign Pedro. This all comes hard on the heels of the lengthy courting of Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos, who was first the subject of a £28m offer that had no chance of being accepted, then a potential exchange with goalkeeper David de Gea.

The suspicion among outsiders was that United were simply being strung along before the Spain defender signed a lucrative new deal at the Bernabeu - suspicions confirmed when he signed a five-year contract.

It was a pattern that first emerged when David Moyes succeeded Ferguson as manager and proposed deals for Everton's Leighton Baines, Cesc Fabregas (who moved from Barcelona to Chelsea) and another former Barcelona player Thiago Alcantara, who went to Bayern Munich, were among those that failed to materialise.

For all United's global fanbase, their mixed recent transfer record is proof that they are now back among the pack when it comes to the world's top clubs, even when it comes to competing with domestic rivals such as Chelsea and Manchester City.
It may be a tough message to take - but one that is supported by hard evidence.

Man United's top priorities?
David De Gea
Manager Louis van Gaal has said keeper David de Gea is "not in the right frame of mind" to play
Pedro would have been a fine addition to United's squad, a player of proven pedigree with an attitude that has drawn lavish praise from the likes of his former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola.

The sight of him being paraded in a Chelsea shirt will be a disappointment - but was he actually a top priority?
The answer to this is probably "no", which may have contributed to United becoming less enthused about the deal, although the change of mind appears to have been very sudden. There were also claims Pedro had been put off the switch by Van Gaal's public sidelining of his former Barcelona team-mate, goalkeeper Victor Valdes.

United's priority must surely lie in securing another striker. For all Van Gaal's positive talk resources behind Wayne Rooney look mighty thin and must be addressed with the acquisition of quality.

Wayne Rooney of Manchester United
Debate continues as to where Wayne Rooney's best position is - the No 10 role or main striker
It would be high-risk to start the season relying so heavily on Rooney, backed up by Javier Hernandez, who has barely seen action under Van Gaal, and youngster James Wilson. Van Gaal may shuffle his resources but the bottom line is United need a high-quality addition in that area to fill the vacancy left by Robin van Persie's departure for Fenerbahce.

And with Ramos staying at Real and Otamendi seemingly heading for Manchester City, United may also feel the need to make additions in central defence. Chris Smalling has been outstanding so far this season but Phil Jones has not kicked on while Jonny Evans appears surplus to requirements. Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett are still making their way at Old Trafford. Marcos Rojo is also in the squad but Van Gaal may need more.

Van Gaal must also address the unsatisfactory situation of having a world-class goalkeeper like De Gea sitting in the stands cutting an increasingly isolated figure - this is surely unsustainable. United may play hard ball with Real Madrid in this deal but it must be cleared before the deadline. Is there really any mileage in keeping a clearly discontented player for a whole season then face the grim prospect of seeing him walk away for free next summer?

Who next for Man United?
Harry Kane has been on Louis van Gaal's transfer radar all summer but the Tottenham striker has no plans to leave White Hart Lane. Manchester United have been busy in the market this summer bringing in the likes of Memphis Depay, Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Matteo Darmian - but this is not enough to give them the appearance of Premier League title challengers or Champions League contenders.

So who might be next on the hit list?
They have already made a move for Southampton's Senegalese winger Sadio Mane. It is understood United made a bid for the 23-year-old last week, although Saints have denied receiving one.

A striker is a must and United have long been linked with a £40m interest in Tottenham's Harry Kane. The problem here is that Spurs have no intention of selling a player who has become a symbol for the future at White Hart Lane and the 21-year-old England striker has no wish to leave.

There may be other options available.
Karim Benzema has been linked with a move away from Real Madrid all summer, with Arsenal heavily linked, while there is every chance Edinson Cavani could be prized away from Paris St-Germain. Both would fall into the £50m bracket but United would be happy to make such an ambitious statement if the deal could be done.

PSG's Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been making noises about leaving and if ever a player had the charisma and confidence to feel at home at Old Trafford it is the world-class Swede.

United have also been touted as potential suitors for Bayern Munich's £60m-rated Thomas Muller but rather like the Ramos deal this sounds like one that would fall into the "believe it when you see it" category.

In Man United's defence?
Despite making a bright start to his United career Angel Di Maria left the club after one year to join Paris St-Germain for £44.3m
It is easy to criticise United's failure to get the deal over the line but perhaps Van Gaal saw what was coming, felt priorities did lie elsewhere and pulled back at the last-minute. Perhaps memories of the dismal failure of £59.7m Angel Di Maria were too fresh to take the plunge on a deal he had doubts about.

It certainly does not appear money was the problem as far as this deal was concerned but there is no doubt United will face criticism, and perhaps a little embarrassment, when Jose Mourinho and Chelsea parade their new prize.

And, most importantly of all, there is still plenty of time left in this transfer window to make more of the sort of deals they need - final judgement must be reserved until then.

The Pedro transfer saga struck me as odd as United took the longest time to decide as if they were weighing other options ditto Otamendi and Gaitan. It's no loss at all.
After DM ordeal, methinks Argentinians have dropped to the bottom of the list as preferred choices, more so if you have Mendez as agent. Mendez failed to cash in on his prize fighter Falcao. We've heard of his moaning when news emerged that United would not be interested in buying the player at the end of the season. Since then Falcao has taken a massive wage cut to the tune of a 100 thousand pounds per week to play for Chelsea and that too on a loan arrangement with an option to buy come season end.

Well, he's not a super agent after all. If he fails to take De Gea across the transfer line, that would be the second successive failure after Falcao and surely his glittering tag as a super agent will be tarnished. I am sure the hierarchy at United is fully aware that DG was advised by his agent not to renew his contract at all cost. That's probably the reason why United is demanding a premium for the player or he stays. The ball is in DG's hand.

United is improving with each game but it doesn't change the fact that we need a CD and possibly a CF. I've read the tabloids and pundits comments about having the best defensive record since Nov. last year. I say look further and you'll find the facts related to injuries in the heart of our defence.

It's a pity that Otamendi and Mangala are playing for our bitter rivals. Mangala will be a big hit this season and Otamendi will need time to adjust. I reckon City will win the title easily this season.

Manchester United transfer target Pedro chose Chelsea instead 'after warnings about hardline Louis van Gaal'

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/manchester-united-transfer-target-pedro-6281884

The Old Trafford manager's handling of players, including fellow Spaniards Valdes and De Gea, said to have given the forward second thoughts

Miguel RuizLondon calling: Pedro is set to have his Chelsea medical in next 24 hours
Pedro turned his back on a move to Manchester United after reportedly being warned about Louis van Gaal’s brutal style of management.

United’s bid ended on Wednesday, with rivals Chelsea moving in to clinch the signing of the Barcelona and Spain international for £21.3million on a four-year deal.

It has emerged Van Gaal’s treatment of some of his United players, particularly exiled goalkeeper Victor Valdes, may have played a part in Pedro’s decision to reject a move to Old Trafford.

Valdes, a long-time friend and former Barca and Spain team-mate of Pedro's, has been marginalised by Van Gaal after the Dutchman accused him last month of refusing to play for the reserves.

And it has been suggested Pedro had second thoughts on moving to the Red Devils after hearing tales of Van Gaal’s autocratic treatment when it comes to dealing with his squad.

Trouble Dutch: Pedro (right) has chosen not to join pal Valdes under strict Van Gaal
Victor-Valdes-and-Pedro.jpg

Van Gaal’s handling of another Spaniard, David De Gea, and his ongoing predicament may also have caused Pedro to have a change of heart over his next destination.

United chief executive Ed Woodward flew to Spain earlier this week in a bid to complete a deal for Pedro, but returned empty-handed.

As the Reds haggled over the asking price for the player - who had a £21.7m buy-out clause - the champions stepped in on Tuesday night.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho spoke to the 28-year-old following the Blues’ 3-0 demolition at Manchester City on Sunday, which left them with just a point from their first two games; while midfielder Cesc Fabregas urged his former Nou Camp and Spain team-mate to join him in west London.

Between them, the pair are understood to have convinced Pedro to ditch his plans to move to Old Trafford and join the Premier League champions instead.

He will undergo a medical on Thursday.

It represents a spectacular fiasco for United, who had been in the driving seat for some time in the chase for the hero of Barca's recent UEFA Super Cup win.

Manchester United striker search: 6 stars Louis van Gaal could target after missing out on Pedro

The United boss pulled the plug on a deal for the Barcelona star. So who is he looking at instead? We run the rule over potential candidates

New blood: Van Gaal's search for a striker continues
United-strikers-muller.jpg

Louis van Gaal's search for a new striker continues after he sensationally pulled the plug on a deal to sign Pedro.

Manchester United had been expected to wrap up the signing of the Barcelona star, only for Premier League rivals Chelsea to hijack the move.

That leaves Van Gaal with Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and youngster James Wilson as the only recognised strikers at Old Trafford, although Memphis Depay has been used in a central role too.

But the Dutchman is more likely to play out wide - at least initially - leaving Van Gaal in need of reinforcements.

We run the rule over 6 possible contenders...

Karim Benzema
He’s been a regular in Madrid for a number of years now, has a more than respectable goalscoring record and does a hell of a lot in creating for teammates - notably Cristiano Ronaldo.

But still there are those who aren’t fully convinced by the French forward - and one of those is believed to be new Madrid boss Rafa Benitez.

The Spaniard has been talking him up, but it’s widely believed Benitez wants to use either Gareth Bale or Cristiano Ronaldo as a central striker - or even both - this season.

Benzema has 133 goals in 281 appearances for Los Blancos - but maybe the 27-year-old has reached the point where change is needed.

Alexandre Lacazette
“I’m not worried about Alex,” said Lyon chief Herbert Fournier. "Of course, if someone offers €50m or €60m, I imagine that I will only have to wave him off and wish him luck.”

It’s no surprise that clubs around Europe have sat up and taken note of the French international forward, after a magnificent season at Lyon last season.

A livewire in attack, he notched 31 goals in all competitions last term, including 27 as he top scored in Ligue 1, leading the line for Lyon and carving a spot for himself in the senior French squad.

Now 24, the Lyon boy will lead OL into the Champions League next season, unless someone hands over mega money to take him from the French championship into one of Europe’s major leagues.

Only a handful of clubs have the resources to persuade Lyon to part with their prize asset and United are one. His versatility and pace would no doubt prove an asset, but the player himself has suggested he will spend one more season at the Stade Gerland.

But money talks...

Edinson Cavani
The most costly signing in French football history, Edinson Cavani arrived in Paris two years ago, has scored 56 goals in 96 games, completed a quadruple of French trophies last season - and yet it’s hardly been plain sailing.

He arrived having been promised that he would play in a central role more often than not, the Uruguayan has found himself playing second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, asked to play wide in Laurent Blanc’s 4-3-3 formation, rather than centrally. Those opportunities have only presented themself when Ibracadebra has been out of commission through either injury or suspension.

Throw in suggestions that he and the Swede don’t get along - not to mention the numerous video clips of passing opportunities not taken - and this feels like another summer where a Cavani transfer wouldn’t go amiss.

But PSG don’t need to sell, now do they have any real want to - especially after missing out on Carlos Tevez.

Harry Kane
GettyHarry Kane scores twice to help Spurs win the North London Derby at White Hart Lane
After his outstanding debut season in the Premier League, Harry Kane immediately became a £45million target for the Red Devils.

“He’s one of our own” sing the Tottenham Hotspur fans about the England striker, but his goalscoring exploits have made others sit up and take notice.

He’s often worn the captain’s armband for Spurs since his transition to first-team star, but how long can they keep him away from the clutches of Champions League clubs. In this day and age, is that even possible?

Daniel Levy is a no-nonsense negotiator and will only aim for top dollar if he’s persuaded to cash in. He wouldn’t this summer though, would he?

Gonzalo Higuain
The Argentine striker is one of the most highly-rated No.9s around Europe, but has endured something of a nightmare in the last 12 months, after a year featuring big misses in major matches for both club and country.

However, the 27-year-old continues to be linked with a veritable who’s who of Europe’s elite, leading Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis to proclaim that only his £66.8million release clause will see him leave the Partenopei this summer.

Higuain scored 18 goals in 37 games for Napoli last season, but he’s about more than just goals, linking up well with midfield runners and offering an intelligent focal point.

United broke the English transfer record to sign his compatriot Di Maria last summer - dare they do it again for another former Real Madrid man?

Thomas Muller
Reports from Germany on Tuesday night suggested United were ready to table a bid of around £60m for Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller.

But the prospect of them agreeing to let their main striker move to Old Trafford, after allowing club icon Bastian Schweinsteiger to move there, look slim.

TEAM NEWS

Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini is still suspended while Phil Jones remains absent with thrombosis.
Manager Louis van Gaal has said David de Gea will not be picked until after the transfer window has shut.
Newcastle could give a debut to new winger Florian Thauvin but defender Daryl Janmaat is banned after being sent off at Swansea last weekend.

The Magpies are monitoring midfielder Moussa Sissoko, who limped off at half-time in that game with a groin injury.

MOTD COMMENTATOR'S NOTES

Steve Bower: "The midweek European win will have put an extra spring in the Manchester United step because, despite two victories, it has been an underwhelming start to their league season.

"Their challenge now is to build on it against Newcastle and try to find some momentum.
"Newcastle will have to click quickly if they are to make it a happy return to Old Trafford for Steve McClaren.
"His task on Tyneside will take time, and one area that will need drastic improvement is their awful away record. He'll need his team to be disciplined and organised to try to change recent fortunes in Manchester."

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head
The Red Devils have won their last three meetings with the Magpies, scoring eight goals and conceding just one.
Newcastle's only Premier League victory at Old Trafford was by a 1-0 scoreline in December 2013 (D7, L13).
Newcastle have lost 25 Premier League games against Manchester United, more than they have against any other side.

Manchester United
United are looking for a third consecutive league win - they are one of four Premier League teams with maximum points after the first two games. They have kept clean sheets in their opening two games for the first time since 2005-06 - and have not conceded a goal in the four Premier League games that David De Gea has missed since the start of 2013-14.

Louis van Gaal's side have scored more than once in just one of their last eight league matches. They have won 15 of their last 19 Premier League games at Old Trafford.

Newcastle
Newcastle have lost seven consecutive Premier League away games. They haven't lost eight league fixtures in a row since a run of nine defeats in October 1977. The Magpies have lost 10 of their last 13 league games (W1, D2).

Newcastle have been shown a league-high eight red cards since the start of last season. Head coach Steve McClaren spent two-and-a-half years as assistant manager to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United from 1999 to 2001, winning three Premier League titles, the Champions League and the FA Cup - when they beat Newcastle in the final.

TGIF ...cheeky fan advice handed to LVG on transfer strategy and game tactics (with diagrams) :D

Manchester United fan brilliantly hands Louis van Gaal a list of tactics and transfer advice

Lee Thomas-Mason for Metro.co.uk. Thursday 20 Aug 2015 1:10 pm

One Manchester United fan has taken his love for the club to extreme new lengths by handing Louis van Gaal a sheet of paper with personal tactics and transfer advice.

Hesham Bilal-Hafiz, the avid United fan in question, prepared his work of detailed formations and transfer targets before heading down to Manchester United’s Carrington training ground to personally hand over the advice.

The work, titled ‘Fan Perspective’, showed how Hesham believes Mr Van Gaal should be picking his team with specific instructions as and when to deploy his substitutes – more notably the rotation policy between Michael Carrick and Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Brilliant! Man United fan hands LvG a list of tactics and transfer advice - and he takes it!
Be honest though, we all loved doing this in school didn’t we?
formation (1).jpg

Having seen the club miss out on Nicolas Otamendi and Pedro to Manchester City and Chelsea respectively, the fan wanted to pass on some of his transfer knowledge to Ed Woodward before the window closes next month.

Hesham drives a hard bargain too! He wants the De Gea situation resolved pronto, he demands the club only allow the Spanish international leave Madrid for anywhere between £25 – £30million with Spurs’ Hugo Lloris the No 1 replacement.

Absolutely love the detail. (Picture: Twitter)

Here’s the tweet in full:

To be fair to Hesham, he’s pretty much nailed it which is why we’re disappointed he’s not backing himself:

It can only happen with Man U fans becuz they care.

If only we nailed the CD and CF positions.............................Well, back to wishful thinking.:D

Why the sudden interest in Adnan Januzaj?

I thought he impressed in his last game against Aston Villa but feel LvG will let him go before the window closes.
Let's face it, he's had a pretty tough time under Van Gaal.

How about Alexander Kokorin and Aymeric Laporte? :p

I thought he impressed in his last game against Aston Villa but feel LvG will let him go before the window closes.
Let's face it, he's had a pretty tough time under Van Gaal.

Januzaj is on his second or third year of his contract and the manager has to assess him before they draw up a contract extension but if he fails, it's likely he'll be shown the door.

No one doubt his skills and technique, but his decision making leaves a lot to be desired. Improvements in decision making can only come if he plays regularly. He has to learn to play for the team and not himself. There was a lot of evidence to suggest that he hasn't matured into that frame of mind yet-holding on to the ball unnecessarily, not using his option to pass to a better position team mate, shooting for goal when there are others who are in a better position to score, etc, etc.

He's much like Ronaldo in his early years, an unpolished diamond. When Ron changed the way he played and understands the importance of team play and decision making, his career took off like a rocket. Januzaj is one key away from unlocking it and it is entirely up to him.

I hope he succeed and I think he can.

How about Alexander Kokorin and Aymeric Laporte? :p

The boss has a 3 year contract and is already on his second. He has plugged most of the holes this season with players he knows he can trust and play to his 'philosophy'. The spine which Giggs alluded to are Blind(defence), Basti(midfield), Memphis(attack) and I believe the mystery player is none other than Mueller. These are the players that have played for Van Gaal in the past.

It's very difficult given the nature of his contract, to evaluate 'new' talents or players the club or fans think would be the panacea to the team's weakness. It is one thing to have skills and ability but it's quite another when it comes to playing to his philosophy, an added filter if you like. LVG is going back to what he knows best and turn to the players whom he has coached in the past.

Methinks Laporte is a good one. I know of two teams in Europe who can't wait for September 1 to arrive-Ajax and Bayern Munich. If Mueller puts in a transfer request, you can be sure Woodward will be on the next plane to Munich. The caveat here is it's a super, duper longshot (500:1). My guess is there could be one more signing before they close the books.

Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle: 5 reasons for Red Devils fans to remain positive

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/match-reports/manchester-united-0-0-newcastle-6301342

The Red Devils failed to win for the first time this season but there were plenty of positives for Louis van Gaal and the Old Trafford faithful

Manchester United were held to a 0-0 draw by Newcastle as their 100 per cent start to the season came to an end at Old Trafford.

Despite failing to start a Premier League season with three wins in a row, which United last achieved in 2011/12, they could take plenty of heart from a positive performance in front of their own fans.

It could have been a different story had Wayne Rooney's third-minute goal not been ruled out for a marginal offside call.

Javier Hernandez also missed a great chance at the end, and Louis van Gaal said it had been one of the best performances of his reign, despite only taking a point.

Here are five reasons for United's fans to be positive after the stalemate:

United look tight at the back
Action ImagesManchester United v Newcastle UnitedDefence: Sergio Romero kept a third Premier League clean sheet in a row
This is only the third time that the Red Devils have started a Premier League season with three successive clean sheets, having done so in 1997/98 and 2005/06.

Okay, they might have finished second in both of those seasons, but solidity at the back can allow United to build a solid platform as they look to put the finishing touches to the attack.

These clean sheets have been achieved without want away player of the year David de Gea as well, and Sergio Romero has become the first goalkeeper since David Ospina to keep a clean sheet in each of his first three Premier League games.

Rooney reignites to silence critics
Wayne Rooney had two shots on target in the game. It's been a lacklustre start to the season for Wayne Rooney, with the manager jumping to the defence of his striker earlier this week after a goalless start to the season for the England captain.

While he might not have been back to his best against Newcastle United, he did have more than one shot on target for only the second time in his 21 Premier League appearances in 2015.

Rooney looked brighter when he moved deeper, playing behind substitute Javier Hernandez, and there were signs that he could be close to ending his 858 minute goal drought for United.

Krul plays a blinder
Tim Krul made eight saves to deny Manchester United. Louis van Gaal called this performance from United 'fantastic' and one of the best since he arrived at the club.

United might have failed to claim all three points, but they created enough chances to have won the match having registered eight shots on target, having had just three across their two 1-0 victories against Tottenham and Aston Villa.

The eight saves made by Krul were his most in a single game since he made an astonishing 14 against Tottenham in November 2013.

Against a lesser keeper United could have had a hatful.

Shaw and Depay look a danger down the left
Clive BrunskillAttack: Luke Shaw and Memphis Depay look a dangerous combination
United looked at their most dangerous when they attacked down the left and there are signs that Luke Shaw and Memphis Depay are striking up a good understanding on that flank.

After an uncertain first season at Old Trafford Shaw has looked a lot more comfortable this term, and Depay's first two United goals in the Champions League against Club Brugge have boosted his confidence.

The two could prove a real handful to defences as the season wears on.

Schweinsteiger gets closer to match fitness

Julian FinneyPass master: Bastian Schweinsteiger made his Premier League debut
Bastian Schweinsteiger made his first Premier League start for United against Newcastle, and while he didn't pull up any trees he has improved his match fitness.

The German international lasted 59 minutes at Old Trafford and can only benefit from his first start in the league as he looks to get up to speed following his move from Bayern Munich.

Schweinsteiger made 58 passes in his time on the pitch, with 81 per cent of them accurate.

If Pedro and his camp had indeed given Man U an ultimatum, the club did the right thing to pull the plug. He probably feels he can walk into the club and dictate matters as he sees fit, bigger than the club attitude. Well, he's now a Chelsea player and good luck to him.

After Pedro, many new names have emerged-Mane, Griezmann and now Neymar. The tabloids are going into full gear, interviewing ex players, conspiracy theories, etc with the aim of driving him out of Old Trafford. With his limited proficiency in the English language and his volatile temperament, he's a sitting duck waiting to be shot at every turn.

LVG should just delegate the task to his assistant, Giggsy and perhaps he could turn to Ferguson on how best to handle the media clowns.

2nd leg, comfort with 2 goal advantage?

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PLAY-OFF SECOND LEG
Venue: Jan Breydelstadion Date: Wednesday, 26 August Kick-off: 19:45 BST

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal said Marouane Fellaini will play in attack rather than midfield this season before Wednesday's Champions League play-off tie at Club Brugge.

Fellaini came off the bench to score a late third goal as United won the first leg 3-1 against the Belgian side.
"This year he'll be more a number nine or 10 than at six or eight," said Van Gaal of the Belgium international, 27.
Keeper David De Gea, a Real Madrid target, is not in the United squad.

The Old Trafford club have bolstered their midfield options this summer by signing France international Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger, a World Cup winner with Germany.

They missed out on Spain forward Pedro, who signed for Chelsea from Barcelona for £21.1m last Thursday, and have been linked with several strikers during this transfer window, which closes on 1 September.
But Van Gaal, 64, has insisted his side do not need a new forward, despite United scoring only twice in three Premier League games this season.

Netherlands forward Memphis Depay scored two against Club Brugge last week, but England captain Wayne Rooney is yet to get off the mark. Fellaini, who played up front at times for Van Gaal last season, said: "I have played number nine and number 10 to help the team.

"It's not important where I play, the most important thing is to win the game. It's different to play midfield, striker or number 10, but I enjoy all the positions I can play in."

Marcos Rojo is set to play 60 minutes for a reserve XI against Ajax. Meanwhile, Van Gaal has arranged a reserve friendly against Ajax on Thursday, where defender Marcus Rojo will play for an hour following his late return to pre-season after playing for Argentina in the Copa America.

The Dutchman said it was difficult for his team to get playing time outside of the first XI.
"That it is a problem," he said. "The only way is to play matches in the second team because that is the first step to coming back.
"Now, seven to eight players have to play against the Ajax second team on Thursday because they need to play 90 minutes. Rojo shall play for 60 minutes."

This is where people management skills come in. He's playing under a cloud of uncertainty. He looked troubled when he came on as sub against Newcastle and he has lost that fire in his eyes, that determination that says I'll score the winner. Pity him. LVG and Giggs should talk to him and I hope they won't give up on him. Nice bloke.
