Mohamad Hanafi Alladin, 52, attacked a cook for 'staring' at him in a coffee shop was jailed for 20 months yesterday.
The jobless man admitted slapping, punching, kicking and hitting Mr Mohamed Razib Hussin, 29, with a plastic chair.
The Malaysian suffered a broken nose, swollen eyes and cuts above his left eyelid.
According to a report in The Straits Times, Hanafi launched the attack along with Mohamad Yazid Minhat, 38, Muhammad Izapi Nordin, 32, and an unknown man called “Yem” at Saffron’s Cafeteria at Block 201D Tampines Street 21 on Feb 22 this year.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Jason Chua, who showed CCTV footage of the assault to the court, said Mr Razib and his friend Mr Mohamed Azahal Yusof, 40, a taxi driver, were having supper at the coffee shop at about 2.15am.
About half an hour later, Mr Azahal went to the rear to wash his hands when he saw Hanafi and three others approach the victim at the table.
Hanafi slapped Mr Razib’s face while one of his friends told the victim that he was a “gangster”. Yazid then slapped the victim on the head, causing him to fall backwards onto the ground.
The four then began hitting Mr Razib and when he tried to stand, Hanafi slapped him and caused him to fall backwards. Mr Chua said Hanafi repeatedly scolded the victim, slapped and stomped on his face and swung a plastic chair at his head and body. Izapi and Yem also used chairs in their assault.
Earlier this month, Yazid was sentenced to 15 months’ jail and three strokes of the cane, and Izapi to six months. Mr Chua highlighted this and said that Hanafi’s sentence must be substantially more as he has two previous convictions for causing hurt.
