A Chinese national was charged in court on Friday with the murder of his 41-year-old wife, Madam Liu Bijiao.

Hu Zi Qing was arrested on Thursday morning after Madam Liu - who was also from China - was found dead in their Choa Chu Kang Avenue 2 flat earlier at about 4.02am.

The 58-year-old man did not admit to the charge when he appeared before the court. He has been remanded for a week at Central Police Division for further investigations.

Neighbours told The Straits Times on Thursday that the couple have a daughter who goes to a secondary school here. The husband faces the death penalty if he is found guilty of murder.

“I thought I was dreaming, but when I opened my eyes I could still hear the cries,” said the 25-year-old accountant, who gave her name as only Amy.

She and her two flatmates decided to investigate, but things were quiet when they opened their room door.

But their 41-year-old landlady from China was killed in the wee hours of yesterday morning in the four-room flat in Choa Chu Kang Avenue 2.

A 58-year-old man, believed to be her husband, was arrested by the police in connection to the murder.
