Man lied to get divorce, jailed
<!-- by line --> By Khushwant Singh
IN MARCH 2005, Eddie Lim Chiew Kiong filed a divorce petition on the grounds that his marriage to a Vietnamese woman had not been consummated. For making this false claim, the 38-year-old was jailed for six months on Tuesday. A district court heard that he had married Madam Tran Thuy Tra My, 33, in October 2000 and she moved in to stay with him and his parents. All was fine till she discovered his affair with a Chinese national. She and Lim, then a director of a telephone retail business in Geylang, decided to split up. They had no children.
Although they had regular sex, Lim claimed in his affidavit that that they did not consummate the marriage as she fell out of love with him. Madam Tran did not contest the divorce and the marriage was declared void in July 2005. Four months later, he remarried, this time to his Chinese national girlfriend, who was then carrying his child. District Judge Sarjit Singh allowed Lim to start his jail term on Feb 19 so that he could spend Chinese New Year with his wife and four-year-old child.
