THE body of a man with injuries to his face was found at a park in Ang Mo Kio early on Saturday morning, with some of his belongings, including cash, still on him.

An umbrella, believed to be the murder weapon, was found nearby. The police arrested an 18-year- old man in the vicinity a few hours later, and have classified the case as murder.

Police said they received a call at 6.40am about an assault in Ang Mo Kio Town Garden West, opposite Ang Mo Kio library.

The man, aged 64, had cuts and abrasions on his face and was pronounced dead by paramedics at 7.10am. He was wearing a checked shirt and green shorts.

A cleaner at the park, Mr Ng Ah Chue, 70, told The Sunday Times that when he arrived for his shift at 7am, he saw a crowd of people surrounding someone on the ground.

He thought that the person had simply fainted or been injured. A paramedic later told him that a man had been beaten to death.
