A man was sentenced to two years and two strokes of the cane on Tuesday for trying to extort $4,000 from the brother of his ex-girlfriend. He did so by threatening to expose video clips of her engaging in sexual acts.
Mohamed Rayzal Shah Hood, 26, who pleaded guilty, was jailed another two months for misappropriating $468 from a mobile phone shop in Toa Payoh where he worked as a sales assistant last June. A district court heard that Rayzal, unemployed, was in a relationship with the 22-year-old victim from April last year. Four months later, she discovered that she was pregnant with his child. She arrange for an abortion and broke up with him.
Since late August, pretending to be someone named "Firdaus'', Rayzal began harassing the victim with text messages claiming to know intimate details of her life, including her pregnancy. "Firdaus'' threatened to expose her past to her family unless she sent him videos of her engaging in sexual activities with her former boyfriend.
The victim approached Rayzal and told him about the text messages. On several occasions in September, they checked into a hotel and took sex videos. The victim emailed these to a designated email account. On Oct 8, Rayzal tried to extort $4,000 from the victim's brother by threatening to disseminate the sex videos of his sister. The victim's brother lodged a police report and Rayzal was arrested the next day.
