A man died at a hospital after a Taser was administered during a fight with U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agents at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, a San Diego police lieutenant said Thursday.

San Diego police were called to the San Ysidro Port of Entry at 720 East San Ysidro Blvd. at 7:07 p.m. Wednesday to assist medics with a man who wasn’t breathing, said homicide Lt. Paul Rorrison.

Officers arrived with medics to discover customs agents performing CPR on a 40 year-old man, who was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead at 7:57 p.m., Rorrison said.

The preliminary investigation revealed the man had crossed into the U.S. through the pedestrian walkway and was detained as he entered the port of entry, the lieutenant said. He was then sent into a security office for further investigation, where it was revealed he had an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest.

“As agents attempted to take the male into custody, he jumped over theprocessing counter and attacked an agent. Additional agents responded to assist in restraining the male,’’ Rorrison said. ”The male would not comply with the agents’ instructions and had concealed his hands from the view of the agents.

One agent used his Taser in an attempt to stop the male’s combative behavior.

The male became unresponsive and stopped breathing.’’

Four agents suffered moderate injuries and were transported to a hospital for treatment, he said.

The man’s name was withheld pending notification of relatives, Rorrison said. The cause of his death was pending investigation by the medical examiner.
