A 22-year-old Russian man has reportedly confessed to beheading and gutting his 18-year-old estranged wife and dumping her mangled corpse in a river.

The pair fought regularly, friends told local media, and Olga Onipenko recently decided to go into hiding from Victor, denying him access to their nine-month-old son.

Olga's headless body was dredged from the River Krivaya Bolda near the city of Astrakhan, close to the Kazakhstan border.

In a fight over custody of the child, Victor stabbed Olga in the stomach and back, according to a news report on Russian TV channel NTV.

He then reportedly disembowelled his wife, cut off her head and threw her body in the river.

She was originally identified by a tattoo. Her head was later found.

Victor was arrested not long afterwards, and police said he has confessed.

Those close to Olga said he was an abusive partner, who got Olga pregnant at 16 years old after dating her for three years.

Victor's family told NTV he's not a violent man and not capable of such a cruel murder.

The child is now in an orphanage, according to reports.
