BUTTERWORTH: The Customs Department seized more than RM800,000 (S$320,000) worth of syabu hidden in a secret compartment of a bag at the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas here.
The 29-year-old owner of the bag, who arrived from Brunei via Kuala Lumpur, was detained after he was seen acting suspiciously at about 11.30pm on Monday.
Department director Datuk Zulkifli Yahya said a scan of the man's luggage revealed the syabu which was wrapped in a yellow plastic bag in the secret compartment. The syabu was later weighed in at 4.1kg.
"Investigations showed that he picked up the drugs from a contact in Brunei. He was acting on his own without the involvement of a syndicate," he said yesterday.
Zulkifli said the case had been classified as trafficking under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death sentence.
He urged the public to come forward and provide the department with information on drug trafficking acti*vities by calling the narcotics unit (04-3318920) or the department's toll-free line (1-800-88-8855). Infor-mants will be rewarded.
