SINGAPORE - A 43-year-old woman who suffered first degree burns to more than 80 per cent of her body after her former lover allegedly set her on fire, died late last night.

According to a Shin Min Daily News report, the incident happened at 8.30am Friday morning in Sengkang.

The woman, Ms Xiong Meiling, was staying with her aunt's family at Compassvale Lane Blk 206B, after moving out of her lover's home after a fight.

Neighbours reported seeing the man, believed to be in his 40s, outside the family's flat on the 14th floor.

The Chinese news daily reported that he was splashing kerosene on the door.

One neighbour, Mr Guo, 47, reported seeing a badly-burnt Ms Xiong emerging from the flat wrapped in a towel.

Mr Guo told The New Paper that he was woken up by loud shouting, and saw flames coming out from the neighbouring unit.

A man was standing ouside shouting: "My wife is inside!"

He got his family to help put out the fire by throwing pails of water on the burning gate and door.

Hearing a commotion, a male occupant in his thirties, believed to be Ms Xiong's younger cousin, opened the door. The man immediately rushed in to the flat, and that was how he got burnt in the process.

According to the victim's uncle, Mr Phua, 60, his niece had been together with the man for three years and were living together before they broke up.

Her parents are currently living in Taiwan and have not been informed of their daughter's condition.

The suspect and Mr Phua's son were also injured. Both suffered second degree burns to their limbs.

Ms Xiong died at 11.05pm yesterday.

Her cousin, Mr Phua Duan Kai, 32, is now in critical condition after attempting to put out the flames and is hospitalised at the Singapore General Hospital's burns unit.

According to the Shin Min Daily News, Minister of Parliament for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, Mr Teo Ser Luck, had arrived on the scene to lend a helping hand.

Mr Teo drove Mr Phua and his wife to visit their son in hospital, and thanked neighbours for their help in putting out the flames.

SINGAPORE - A 43-year-old woman suffered first degree burns to more than 80 per cent of her body when her former lover allegedly set her on fire on Friday morning.

She died late Friday night.

Lim Ghim Peow, 44, is being charged with the death of Ms Hsiung Wei Ling, 43, at her uncle's home in Sengkang.

According to The Straits Times, the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force received a call for help at about 8.30am Friday.

When they arrived at the scene at Block 206B, Compassvale Lane, the blaze had been put out but three people had been injured : Ms Hsiung, her cousin Phua Duan Kai, 32, and Lim.

Neighbours reported seeing the man earlier outside the family's flat on the 14th floor splashing kerosene on the door.

One neighbour, Mr Guo, 47, told The New Paper that he was woken up by loud shouting, and saw flames coming out from the neighbouring unit.

A man was standing ouside shouting: "My wife is inside!"

He got his family to help put out the fire by throwing pails of water on the burning gate and door.

Hearing a commotion, her younger cousin rushed in to the flat to rescue Ms Hsiung and got burnt in the process.

Mr Guo said he saw a badly-burnt Ms Xiong emerging from the flat wrapped in a towel.

According to the victim's uncle, Mr Phua, 60, his niece had been together with the man for three years and were living together before they broke up.

She had then left her Hougang home to go to Malaysia in order to avoid Lim.

However, she had returned to Singapore a few days ago to vote in the Hougang by-election yesterday.

Lim tracked her down and allegedly set fire to the Sengkang flat when she rejected his advances, ST reported.

The suspect was also injured and suffered second degree burns to his limbs.

Her cousin was sent to the Singapore General Hospital's burns unit in critical condition.

A man has been charged for allegedly murdering his former girlfriend by torching an apartment.

Lim Ghim Peow was accused of setting fire to a flat located at the 14th floor of Blk 206B, Compassvale Lane in Sengkang, at 8.30am last Friday (25 May).

That was the apartment where his former lover Hsiung Wei Ling lived.

Neighbours had allegedly seen the 44-year-old man splashing kerosene on the door before shouting “My wife is inside!” while he stood outside the unit.

Seeing that the flat was on fire, neighbours rushed to splash water on the burning door.

Ms Hsiung’s cousin Phua Duan Kai, who lives in the unit, dashed into the flat to save the 43-year-old woman.

Mr Phua, 31, suffered burns as a result.

The cousins were sent to the Singapore General Hospital. Ms Hsiung sustained 86 per cent burns while Mr Phua is in critical condition.

Later that day, Ms Hsiung died from her injuries.

She was said to have cohabited with Lim for three years and the pair were known to a loving couple.

However, they had broken up last month for unknown reasons and Ms Hsiung had supposedly left to stay in Malaysia to avoid Lim who was pestering her.

She had returned to Singapore to vote in the Hougang by-election.

Lim was said to have tracked her down at the Sengkang flat and allegedly set fire to it after she rejected his advances.

Those who know Lim say that he used to be active in gangs but turned over a new leaf several years ago when he rented a coffeeshop and learnt to do business, according to Lianhe Wanbao.

His friends speculated that he had made the decision because he wanted to settle down and start a family with Ms Hsiung.

But his business failed and no one has heard from him since.

Ms Hsiung’s friends and relatives also said the two were very close and often called each other husband and wife.
