SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a 24-year-old man for theft of gold bracelets at a goldsmith shop.
The suspect had gone to a goldsmith shop at the vicinity of Geylang Road at 7.20pm on April 7 on the pretext of buying gold bracelets.
While the shop assistant was showing him the jewellery, he took three gold bracelets and fled. The three bracelets amounted to about $8,500.
The identity of the suspect was established in three hours after officers conducted extensive ground enquiries after the report was lodged.
The suspect was arrested yesterday at 10pm near Canberra Link. The three bracelets were also recovered. He will be charged in court on Wednesday for theft. If convicted, the suspect will face a jail term of up to seven years and shall also be liable to a fine.
Police advise shop owners to install good quality closed-circuit televisions, and when showing expensive goods such as jewellery to customers, shop staff should always keep an eye on the item and raise the alert signal when needed.
