SINGAPORE: An unemployed man who allegedly attacked and molested a woman was arrested on Thursday.

Police said they nabbed the 22-year-old less than three days after the incident was reported.

On March 17, the 25-year-old victim filed a police report after being molested along the Ayer Rajah Expressway near West Coast Way as she was walking home.

The victim said the suspect got off a bicycle and punched her, causing her to fall.

He then pinned her to the ground and molested her.

He fled only when two passers-by approached, and the bicycle was later found in the vicinity.

The suspect was arrested at Merpati Road in the MacPherson area.

Officers interviewed witnesses, reviewed CCTV footage, and sieved through physical evidence that was collected in order to establish the identity of the suspect.

A massive ground operation was then launched.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Melvin Yong, who is also Commander for Clementi Police Division, said: "In the past three days, more than 60 officers from the CID (Criminal Investigation Department) and Clementi Police Division have worked round the clock to gather information and evidence on the culprit.

“Police will spare no effort to keep our streets and our neighbourhoods safe for our residents."

Police added that a second case of outrage of modesty had taken place in the West Coast area on the same night the first incident occurred, but it has not been established if both cases are connected to the same suspect.

Investigations into both cases are ongoing. - CNA/gn
