Man, 22, arrested for suspected snatch theft

SINGAPORE - Police arrested a 22-year-old man believed to be involved in several cases of snatch theft in the vicinity of Jurong East housing estate.
Police received several reports of snatch theft from Feb 13 to Feb 16. Victims' mobile phones were allegedly snatched away by an unknown man.
In all the cases, the culprit would approach the victims on the pretext of borrowing their mobile phones and/or asking for directions before snatching the mobile phones away.
Officers from Clementi Police Division intensified patrols and conducted thorough investigations in the area.
They spotted a male subject befitting the description in Jurong East Street 24 on Thursday, Feb 21.
He was detained and subsequently placed under arrest. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to be involved in at least three cases of Snatch Theft.
The suspect will be charged in Court on Feb 23, 2013 for the offence of Snatch Theft under Section 356 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to 7 years.
