Six men have been arrested in central China in connection with the rape of an 11-year-old girl who was forced into prostitution at a karaoke bar.
The girl went missing from her home in Qidong county in Hunan province on September 29. A statement issued by the county government on Tuesday said she had been made to work at a karaoke bar and raped multiple times.
Her family called police four days after she went missing and the girl was found in a hotel another three days later, it said.
In October police detained seven people in connection with the case, but only two were initially charged until the girl’s father complained online that her alleged rapists had been using their connections to escape charges.

The father’s social media post sparked a public outcry and four more men have since been charged. The suspects include the bar owner, a man accused of introducing her to customers and four alleged patrons of the bar. They include one man who worked for the Qidong county government and an employee of a government-owned bank.

The seventh person questioned, a pregnant woman accused of facilitating prostitution, has been released on bail.

The girl, who had been living with her grandparents while her parents worked in another city, was “tricked into working” at the karaoke club by a schoolmate, her father said in his post.

She was threatened and forced to entertain male customers at the club, including singing and drinking with them, but all the money went into the pockets of the owner and middlemen, he claimed.

The girl was now receiving therapy at a hospital in the provincial capital Changsha, he added.

Under Chinese law, all sex cases involving under-14s are treated as rape.

NEW DELHI — An Indian court on Monday convicted six men over the kidnap, rape and murder of a Muslim nomadic girl last year, bringing to a close a case that gripped India and reflected bitter religious divisions.
After a closed trial, the men, who included police officials, were handed sentences ranging from five years to life imprisonment for their crimes against the 8-year-old girl, which occurred in the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir. A seventh person was acquitted for lack of evidence.
The mother of the girl, whose name and identity were protected by court order, said the decision was “a victory for all those sane voices that campaigned for justice.”
The case provoked weeks of protest and breathless front-page coverage in India, with a level of outrage reminiscent of the reaction several years ago when a young woman was raped on a bus and died of her injuries.

Beyond its brutality, the crime was noteworthy for the role religion played in heightening tensions. According to investigators, the man behind the plot, Sanji Ram, a retired government revenue officer, had targeted the 8-year-old girl to strike fear in her Muslim nomadic tribe, the Bakarwal, and drive them from the rugged Himalayan region where they live as shepherds.

In January 2018, the girl was kidnapped from a meadow and locked in a remote Hindu temple in the district of Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir. For days, several men, all of them Hindu, drugged, starved and gang-raped her. She was eventually strangled and hit in the head with a rock. The girl’s body was dumped in a forest, her purple dress stained with blood.

The story initially made few ripples beyond local news outlets. But in April 2018, The Indian Express, one of India’s most widely circulated newspapers, published graphic details from a police report, including the detail that one of the men, himself a police official, had asked that the girl be kept alive so he could rape her one last time.

The crime quickly became a religious flash point in India. Some Hindu nationalists rallied to the side of the men, saying that they had been set up and were innocent.


Protests spread in Kathua. Dozens of Hindu women organized hunger strikes and threatened to set themselves on fire if the case proceeded. At one point, a mob of Hindu lawyers physically blocked police officers from entering a courthouse to file charges against the men.

Several prominent members of the governing Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party also pushed to move the case from the state police to the Central Bureau of Investigation, a strategy that was perceived by many as an attempt to win leniency for the accused. (The C.B.I. falls under the purview of the central government.)

Reacting to Monday’s verdict, Sarah Jacob, an anchor on NDTV, an Indian news channel, said that the case’s handling had all the elements of a “bad horror movie.”

“Every single loophole that could have been abused has been abused,” she said. “This is not just a victory for the family of that 8-year-old girl. It’s a victory of the legal system in our country.”

A minor girl was found to be pregnant in a village under Yelamanchili police station limits in Visakhapatnam district. The 15-year-old girl was allegedly repeatedly gang-raped by three youngsters from the same area.

A week ago, the girl’s grandparents observed a growing bump on the girl and they took the girl to a hospital at Tuni of East Godavari district, where she was confirmed to be six-months-pregnant. Man held for ‘raping’ daughter

A 37-year-old man was arrested by Vikarabad police on the charge of raping his 13-year-old daughter. The accused, a resident of Allapur under Karankote police, was sexually assaulting his daughter, a Madrasa student, SP M Narayana said. She had been sent home due to lockdown. The girl is the child from his third wife. The SP said the incident came to light when the man left her at his brother’s house, where family members found her upset and questioned. She narrated the incident to them, who approached the police. “The victim’s mother passed away when she was three years,” the SP said.
Later, her father married another woman. Even his fourth wife was aware of the offence, but the accused threatened her with dire consequence if she revealed it to anyone,” Mr. Narayana said.

He said that based on the complaint lodged by the family members, a case under the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was registered against the man.

The 16-year-old girl broke her silence after six years, mother filed complaint

A 53-year-old man, arrested four years ago for raping his own daughter for six years, was convicted on Friday. Investigating officers said that forensic reports and corroborative evidence helped nail him.
According to the Aarey police, the accused was arrested in 2015 after the victim, who was 16-years-old at the time, broke her silence.

“The girl told her elder sister that their father had first forced himself on her when she was ten years old, and had continued to exploit her ever since. He would repeatedly keep threatening to harm her if she told anyone about it and the victim managed to stay silent for six years before the sustained abuse became too much for her to take,” an officer who was part of the investigation said.
The officer added that both sisters then confided in their mother who, after a lot of deliberation, approached the Aarey police. The victim was immediately subjected to medical tests and a detailed statement was recorded from her, after which the police arrested her father and charged him with rape under the Indian Penal Code along with relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

The police subsequently filed a chargesheet in the case in 2017, and on Friday, a special POCSO Act court in Dindoshi held the father guilty and charged him to 12 years of imprisonment.

Police Inspector Arun Pokharkar, Mumbai Crime Branch, who was at the time Police Inspector (Crime) at the Aarey police station said, “We had presented detailed medical reports as well as statements from around ten witnesses which helped the case a lot. Police Constable Rupali Jadhav with the Aarey police, who was the court liaison in the case, also took tremendous efforts to ensure that all relevant material was submitted in time and in proper format.”

Senior officers said that cases involving family members often fall through in court because not everyone is able to go through the prolonged agony.

“Even if the crime is a heinous one like rape, it is the psychology of the survivor to try and blame themselves, due to which cases are sometimes withdrawn. The support of the people around the survivor is of paramount importance in such cases. The investigating team faces the challenge of ensuring that the victim does not budge from her stand and this has to be handled sensitively,” a senior officer said.
