The price of water being sold to Singapore is "ridiculous", and Malaysia will make a presentation to its neighbour on renegotiating the terms of the water supply deal, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said on Monday (Jun 25).

"I think it is manifestly ridiculous that we should sell water at 3 sen per thousand gallons. That was okay way back in the 1990s or 1930s. But now what can you buy with 3 sen? Nothing," the 92-year-old told Channel NewsAsia in an exclusive interview.

Earlier, Bloomberg had reported that Dr Mahathir intended to go back to the drawing board on the water accord, which is set to expire in 2061.

"We are studying the case properly and we’ll make a presentation," he told Channel NewsAsia.

He is upset by the huge amount of indirect taxation the PAP Government earn from selling the water in Singapore. He wants a share of that profit, by raising the price of water, so that, the Malaysian Government have the share of that pie.

3 sen per thousand GALLONS is a negligible amount even when you add in development, processing, transportation & other costs into the resale of that water to the users in Singapore, the profit margin is huge.

SINGAPORE: Malaysia Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has dubbed a water supply deal with Singapore as “too costly” and said his government needs to renegotiate the agreement with Singapore.

In a Bloomberg interview published on Monday (Jun 25), Malaysia’s 92-year-old leader said water was among the issues with Singapore “that we need to settle”.

"We will sit down and talk with them, like civilised people," he said in the interview.

Treating their water for S$0.0000316 per litre or S$0.01 for 316 litres
Might as well let's cancel the water treaty and everyone lose-lose.

Singapore had to pay rent for the land it used “at the standard rate applicable to building lots on town land”. The water prices remained the same as in the previous agreement – 3 sen per 1,000 gallons of raw water supplied to Singapore and 50 sen per 1,000 gallons of treated water sold to Johor. After Singapore and Malaysia stopped using a common currency in 1973, the prices became denominated in Malaysian ringgit.

The point is not this amount or that amount or the amount agreed even before we were born or after we were born. The point, is the Old Fox, is saying they make so much money from selling that 'liquid gold'. They own the supply, they should get a cut of the profit, by charging more at today's rate like 30 sen per 1,000 gallons or even RM 3....converted to Sing Dollars, the seller across the causeway will still make money. All they need to do, is to raise the water tariffs, increase the indirect taxes like waterborne fees, conservation fees etc..they will still make a profit, for they pay in Ringgit & sell in SINGAPORE DOLLARS.

A share of the kuih Lapis is what the old fox wants...for they have been making so much, with that 'layered' costs.
