Had a closer look at the Chair posted and the damage done ...herewith my opinion , mind you me no expert in this , so just an opinion lahI suppose that was what nice-gook meant.
the problem is in tanning , obviously the tan came off while the leather still looks good , but if such a shoddy tanning is done , I suppose , the leather too could be just as bad , perhaps it’s a question of time before it shows
tanning is a proceed the leather goes through gigantic washing machine cycles where chemicals and colouring is added and churned for hours and hours if not days
obviously the colour is peeling off in the chair , which means not only the tanning is sub standard could also have been done on Sude leather
what is sude leather ? If you slice say a leather into two , the upper side is used for quality products and the bottom side is called sude leather
sude leather is soft and gives you the comfort , in the days before sneakers most casual shoes were made of sude leather
but sude leather is not easy to tan and can never attain the glossiness
hence , I suspect , for the purpose of softness and comfort in a chair ,sude leather were used which normally has poor tanning absorption capability of colours
it is usual for sude leather to have vegetable tanning instead of chemical ..vegetable tanning only gives you a beige colour
