An Indonesian maid went with her aged employer to the ATM often enough to memorise the personal identification number (PIN).

Between last October and March, Ratna Muhammad, 34, stole 86-year-old Mah Puay Hoon's DBS ATM card 72 times.

With it, she made her way to ATMs, mostly in Holland Village and the National University Hospital at Kent Ridge, withdrawing sums of $100 to $1,000 each time. None of the $12,600 she stole has been recovered.

On Wednesday, the maid pleaded guilty and was jailed a year on the 20 charges of theft of an ATM card the court proceeded on; the sum run up in those charges came to $2,800.

An Indonesian maid has been jailed for a year after stealing $12,600 from her elderly employer.

Ratna Muhammad started stealing from her employer Mah Puay Hoon when she snuck into the bedroom of the 86-year-old woman on 3 October last year to steal her ATM card.

Ratna, 34, had secretly memorised Mdm Mah’s personal identification number after accompanying the elderly woman to withdraw money on previous occasions.

With the ATM card, Ratna went to Holland Village and withdrew $400 from Mdm Mah’s bank account. She then put the card back in its place.

Embolden by her success, the maid continued to steal from Mdm Mah a total of 72 times in five months, each time withdrawing amounts between $100 to $1,000.

She would hide the money before looking for a chance to send the money to her family in Indonesia.

Mdm Mah eventually discovered the theft and lodged a police report in March this year. The employer has been unable to retrieve a single cent from Ratna.

In her mitigation, Ratna said she had stolen the money because her mother had cancer and needed money for treatment.

The judge, however, felt that this was unacceptable and said she should not have stolen the savings of her elderly employer.
