THE maid was probably clothed when attacked and her clothes removed later.

This was forensic pathologist Gilbert Lau's view yesterday during Day Two of Indonesian maid Yulia Afriyanti's murder trial.

On the morning of 16 Dec 2007, Miss Yulia's naked body was found in a large cardboard box at a bomb shelter-cum-storeroom in a third-storey unit at a condominium construction site at Queensway, near Holland Road.

Her lover, construction worker Kamrul Hasan Abdul Quddus, 35, is accused of murdering her.

He faces the death penalty if found guilty.

When asked by defence lawyer Ang Sin Teck if it was likely that Miss Yulia, 25, was clothed when she was attacked and subsequently had her clothes removed, Associate Professor Lau agreed.

Mr Ang asked: 'That would be because if MissYulia was naked when assaulted, her body would likely be coated with dust particles from the scene, wouldn't it?'

Assoc Prof Lau said that was possible.

According to autopsy and crime scene reports, Miss Yulia's body was mostly dry, except for bloodstains on her face and lower limbs.

Her upper and lower back and buttocks had a few particles of dust and building materials.

When asked about the pool of blood at the base of the box where Miss Yulia's body was found, Assoc Prof Lau said that probably happened after she was moved to the box.

He said Miss Yulia had probably bled a little from her nostrils and mouth during and after the attack, but lost more blood later, after she was put in the box.

Injuries from struggle

Assoc Prof Lau said that most of the maid's injuries, especially those found on the underside of her chin, the underside of her jaw and her neck, would have been inflicted while she was being strangled and trying to resist her attacker.

He reiterated that several injuries, like a blood clot around her left eye and a fracture around her left lower eyelid, suggested her attacker had also hit or punched her.

When asked about a graze found on the right side of Miss Yulia's chest, extending from her right collarbone to her right nipple, he said that could have occurred when she fell or was pushed onto the floor or any other rough and hard surface.

Assoc Prof Lau also said the abrasions on MissYulia's genitals were relatively fresh, indicating she could have had sex between 4.15am on 15Dec and 4.15am the following day.

The crime scene report said no drag marks were seen on the floor of the master bedroom where the bomb shelter-cum-storeroom was located.

The report also stated that two partial left and right footprints were found on the bedroom floor near the windows, and they were likely to be Kamrul Hasan's.

The trial resumes on Monday.

A BANGLADESHI construction worker involved in a love triangle with an Indonesian maid was on Friday sentenced to death after he was convicted of murdering her.
Kamrul Abdul Hasan Quddus, 35, looked shocked on hearing the guilty verdict, which came almost a year after his High Court trial in February last year.

The naked body of his on-off girlfriend, Ms Yulia Afriyanti, 25, was found stuffed in a cardboard box in a unit of an uncompleted condominium in Queensway on Dec 16, 2007.
Kamrul, who worked at the site, was arrested and charged with her murder. He told police that she was already dead when he found her at the worksite but was too frightened to tell anyone.
During the trial, it emerged that Ms Yulia was also seeing another man during their on-off relationship.
DNA tests showed Kamrul had sex with her before her death; his fingerprints were also found at the scene. But the defence tried to argue that the evidence was circumstantial and did not prove he killed her.
Kamrul chose not to testify in his defence.

INDONESIAN maid Yulia Afriyanti, 25, happily told her family in 2007 that she was returning to her hometown in Java with her Bangladeshi boyfriend Kamrul Hasan Abdul Quddus to get married.
Her family cleaned and painted their house and preared a list of 500 guests. The wedding never took place.
Ms Yulia's naked body was found stuffed in a cardboard box in a condominium under construction in Queensway on Dec 16.
At the trails as witnesses were Ms Yulia's mother and younger sister.
Madam Yulismawati, 38, a housewife, said Ms Yulia had called them in October 2007 to say that she and Kamrul were returning before Hari Raya Puasa and asked the family to get ready for their wedding. Hari Raya, which fell on Oct 12 that year came and went without the arrival of the couple.
Ms Yulia called a week later to say that they were unable to make the trip as Kamrul's mother was sick. A few days later, she told them she had broken off the relationship.
However, the couple reconciled and on the evening of Dec 15 Ms Yulia called home to announce that they plan to get engaged and to marry the next December.
She died the next day. The grief still shows on her mother's face two years after her daughter's death. Madam Yulismawati said she initially had no objections to her daughter's marriage.
After the break-up and reconciliation, she was no longer so sure and had sent her daughter some advice via SMS. Written in Bahasa, the message advised her daughter to think deeply over Kamrul's proposal and to consider the feelings of her hometown boyfriend named Roi. She never received a reply and neither did she pursue the matter, she testified.
Madam Yulismawati first learnt that her daughter had a Bangladeshi boyfriend by the name of Raju in 2007.
Raju was another name for Kamrul but the court was not told why he was using an alias. The court also heard that Kamrul was also known as Roy, Roydoe, and Ray Faldo.

Mr Joseph Guerzon Corpuz, 29, the Filipino boyfriend of dead maid Yulia Afriyanti

Murdered maid Yulia Afriyanti was caught in a tragic love triangle. The maid was said to be involved with construction worker Joseph Guerzon Corpuz and they were happy together.
But the last time Mr Corpuz, 29, saw Ms Yulia, 25, alive was on Dec 9, 2007, and it was then that she told him she was still deeply in love with her former boyfriend Kamrul Hasan Abdul Quddus, 35, and that they were getting married in January .(give year)
She offered to return the cellphone Mr Corpuz had given her but he declined as he wanted to keep in touch with her and try to win her over.
Subsequently, they kept frequent contact with each other, and on the evening of Dec 15, Ms Yulia called Mr Corpuz to tell him she was going to Changi Airport with Kamrul to welcome his mother and brother.
Heartbroken, he told her to take care.
But she never made it to the airport.
Her naked body was found stuffed in a cardboard box the next day in a unit at the Viz@Holland condominium, which was still under construction at the time.
When Mr Corpuz phoned Ms Yulia a few days later, a police officer answered, saying his former girlfriend was dead and that the police wanted to talk to him.

Testifying at the trial, Mr Corpuz said Ms Yulia's telephone number had been given to him in early October 2007 by a close friend known as Aunt Annabelle.
He called Ms Yulia that very day and they made plans to meet on her day off on Sunday, Oct 14.
They spent the afternoon at the East Coast Park before window shopping at City Plaza. He then took her to her employer's house at Grange Heights.
She told him that she had a boyfriend and that he had returned to Bangladesh.
Their relationship blossomed and he would sometimes travel from Boon Lay to meet her when she walked her employer's dog at their condominium at 8 pm every night. They would also meet on Sundays.
In early November, they checked into a hotel but he said nothing happened as she feared getting pregnant. She told him she had had an abortion before she met him but did not name the father.
However, the next time they went to a hotel, they had sex.
One Sunday, her cellphone rang and she asked Mr Corpuz to answer it because the call was from her ex-boyfriend. Kamrul asked who he was, and when he answered "Yulia's boyfriend".
Kamrul said he was planning to marry Ms Yulia and started swearing at Mr Corpuz.

According to the prosecution, Kamrul met Ms Yulia at a social gathering in 2005. They became intimate a year later.
In September 2007, Ms Yulia told her employers and friends that she was returning to Indonesia and would be marrying Kamrul there.
A month later, the marriage was called off. Ms Yulia confided in her employers that Kamrul was already married in Bangladesh with two children. She then began seeing Mr Joseph Guerzon Corpuz, 25, a Filipino construction worker here. They too became intimate.
They planned to marry but she never broke up with Kamrul and on Dec 9, 2007, she told Mr Corpuz she would be marrying Kamrul in January.
Despite this, investigations revealed that Ms Yulia continued her frequent and intimate telephone conversations with Mr Corpuz.
