By M. SIVANANTHA SHARMA
BUTTERWORTH: Malaysians can employ domestic servants from from only seven following the freeze on Indonesian maids by their government, said Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam. The countries are Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka and Philippines.
“Although maids from the Philippines have been coming here for a long time, their numbers have dwindled as they are demanding higher salaries and are opting to go elsewhere,” he added. Dr Subramaniam said the government was responsible for the the safety and welfare of the foreign workers.
“As I have said before, we are a responsible government and have existing laws to protect the legal foreign workers,” he said. He said the Malaysian and Indonesian governments met last month and are expected to sign the memorandum of understanding once the issues that led to the freeze on the Indonesian maids to Malaysia from June 25 last year were ironed out.
Dr Subramaniam was speaking at a press conference after his official visit to Return 2 Green Sdn Bhd in Prai near here on Saturday. The company is the first of its kind in the country involved in R & D and manufacturing of biodegradable Eco packaging products made from biomass renewable resources such as sugar cane husk, rice husk and other agro waste materials.
