The World Electoral Freedom Index (WEFI) measures how free and fair electoral systems are across the world. The survey uses 55 indicators grouped into 4 main sub-indices:
- Political Development (PD) eg. political rights, economic development, electoral freedom
- Active Suffrage (AS) eg voter rights, electoral roll, vote counting procedures
- Passive Suffrage (PS) eg. voter registration, election campaigns, distortion of results
- Elector Empowerment (EE) eg. political pluralism, power of MPs, integrity of political process
How is Singapore ranked? Out of 198 countries surveyed, we're at 173th – sandwiched between Djibouti and Ethiopia. Even Congo, Palestine and Rwanda do better than us.
This, however, doesn't stop LHL from insisting that we have a system “where the opposition will never be shut out, and where the Government will be held to account.”
