Facebook has taken down the video uploaded by States Times Review which showed Li Yipeng being filmed without his knowledge in a taxi ride. We believe Facebook has taken action on request from the Singapore government. We object to the censorship action taken by the Facebook management, and we believe this is an obstruction of public access to news and current affairs. The Singapore Police cannot be trusted and media censorship will only embolden the dictatorship. The driver in the video was charged for "criminal intimidation", of which, we believe this is an excessive charge. The video showed Li Yipeng was, at most, harassed by the driver.
Do take note that we do not speak for the driver, nor do we condone such insolent behaviour. Nonetheless, regardless of the editor's perspective, we believe releasing the video footage would let the public be better-informed of the actual happening, instead of relying on worded descriptions from various news medias.
This is essential considering that the Singapore mainstream media is ranked 151st in the world for press freedom.
Moving forward, since Facebook is showing signs it is unlikely to maintain its independence, we will decentralise our outreach from Facebook.
