New immigrants in S'pore
<!-- by line --> <!-- end by line --> MR SHI De Gang took a risk 12 years ago, travelling to Singapore on his own in search for a better job and life. Mr Shi, then 27-years-old, had been hired by a Singaporean firm as an engineer in a chance recruitment exercise in his hometown of Sichuan, China. Unsure about starting afresh in a new country, he chose to come alone without his family. The first couple of years here was rough on him - he felt he didn't belong and had difficulty adjusting to Singaporean culture. But soon, he realised he was doing well in his job and had even gotten promoted. It was then that he believed he could settle down here, and decided to apply for permanent residency. Soon after he got his application approved, his wife and six-year-old son joined him to live in Singapore in 2002. Fast forward to present day, Mr Shi and his wife, Han Shi Qiong, 39 are now both Singapore citizens. In the first episode of this special RazorTV mini series, Different Cultures, One Home, we get up close and personal with Mr Shi and his family to explore the issues and problems related with new immigrants in Singapore.
