IT'S with pride that I see the SingTel Singapore Grand Prix taking flight so brilliantly. But its success depends on how we Singaporeans conduct ourselves as hosts.
We should always make that extra effort to help tourists find their way, even if it means taking them to their destination.
Singapore was chosen as a Formula One venue because of our shopping culture, our special cuisine, our sunny weather and our relaxed, tourist-friendly environment.
So, retail shopping staff members should provide polite and courteous service.
We should advertise our special and zesty hawker fare, from Hainanese chicken rice to roti prata.
But we must also curb our bad hawker centre habits such as failing to clear trays and messing up the rest rooms. Singapore dubs itself a clean and green city and that is what the tourists should expect.
The long term aim should be to convince visitors here for the Formula One weekend, which starts today, to return for the Youth Olympics in 2010 and patronise the integrated resorts when they open.
