Loh Lin Kok & his $120K entertainment expense claim

For all those who feels Loh has done a wonderful job as President & made so much sacrifice ...... let's scrutinize his record :

Loh’s long reign clouded by controversy
(The Straits Times, 24 Dec 2009)

IN 26 years at the helm of the Singapore Athletic Association, lawyer Loh Lin Kok has been involved in numerous controversies. ST revisits his battles:

1983

Loh installs a new policy for all national athletes to train under a select team of 12 coaches, sparking a series of protests. beginnings of a control freak

Some 80 officials walk out on the Singapore Amateur Athletic Association’s official SEA Games dinner and dance over a dispute on seating arrangements.

A group of officials also boycott the Caltex Age Group Athletic Championships, challenging Loh to take disciplinary action.

Then national sprint champion Haron Mundir and fastest schoolgirl Prema Govindan refuse to join the SAAA’s training scheme, choosing to train with the Singapore Sports Council. If popularly elected, why so many fed up with him from Year 1 - all indisciplined spoilt brats ?

1984

Loh threatens to throw Flash Sports Association president and SAAA presidency candidate, Edmond Pereira, out of the election hall after the latter challenged the legality of the SAAA election meeting.

He warns athletes who skip centralised training sessions: ‘We’ll hit you so hard, you’ll be sorry.’ LKY-like machismo unpresidential language

Loh believes there is a lack of discipline in the SAAA. ‘I have to put the house in order. And if it means ruling with an iron hand, I’ll do it,’ he says.more LKY-imitation

1985

The Registry of Societies warns the SAAA to comply with the existing Societies Act or face action.

Loh wants coach Patrick Zehnder disciplined for trying to get runner S.Pandian to train in America without the SAAA’s approval.

The president orders athletes to join SAAA-affiliated clubs or face a ban.

President of the Singapore National Olympic Council, the late Mr E.W. Barker, tells Loh to ‘get his house in order’ at a Sportsman of the Year dinner. Loh replies: ‘You are welcome to examine my house.’
kwai-lan for kwan-lan sake

1986

The SAAA rejects sprinter Paul Su’s compensation claim for injuries he suffered during training. Loh alleges that Su was covered by his employers and he was trying to ‘make the SAAA out of pocket’.

Loh asks SAAA head coach John Whitson, who was also in charge of the Kallang Athletics Training Centre, to step down as the SSC did not consult him on plans for the centre.

Loh hits out at the SSC for inviting national athletes to train at the centre, claiming it was ‘inciting active rebellion’.

He slams the SSC for imposing conditions barring the SAAA juniors from using the facilities at the National Stadium. petty & self-contradicting : said SCC invite training at stadium vs barring juniors from using

1987

The SAAA cautions that athletes who ran in non-sanctioned meets, such as the SSC’s Brooks 10km Run, will be banned from SAAA meets why so intolerant ?.

1988

The SAAA’s vice-president Victor Khoo quits and urges the SSC and SAAA to work together. teamwork ?

Loh complains that the SSC maintained-National Stadium is in bad shape and a ‘disgrace’. He then claims the SSC has banned national athletes from using the stadium. SSC chairman Dr Tan Eng Liang disputes this.

The SAAA suspends sprinter Haron Mundir for 18 months for cutting short a training stint in Japan, ruling him out of the 1989 SEA Games.

After an appeal, a High Court grants Haron an injunction against the ban.

Mr Barker orders Haron to run in the SEA Games. Bravo Barker. 1st time local athlete goes to court

1989

Haron is not selected for the 4×100m relay team for the SEA Games. SAAA does not pay him for the 100m silver and 200m bronze he won, with Loh labelling his performances as ‘nothing to be proud of’.

SAAA gives local winners of Singapore Marathon their prize money in monthly instalments. Loh says: ‘I don’t want athletes to compete in marathons hoping to win prize-money like striking a lottery.’ ironic contrast to cash cheques in 2009 marathon

1990

Loh accuses four athletes – Xie Yuru, Mona Kunalan, Toh So Liang, P.Parameswaran – of using the press to air their grievances.

Xie is dropped from a junior meet squad for her ‘negative attitude’.

He brands national champion pole vaulter Ng Kean Mun a ‘rotten apple’ for showing attitude at the Asian Games in Beijing. very motivating. kills morale of local talents

Haron remains suspended after 18 months, with Loh saying the ban only begins once the sprinter’s appeal is heard. vindictive

1991

The High Court rules in favour of Haron, who was represented by Pereira.

The SAAA is ordered to pay Haron’s costs of approximately $90,000 in addition to legal fees of $53,743. waste assoc $

1999

Shot-putter James Wong is blasted by Loh for failing to claim gold in discus and hammer at the Brunei SEA Games.

Sprinter Hamkah Afik quits over allowances. Loh slams him for not repaying the money invested in him with results.Nasty & Petty

2000

Before the SAAA elections, SSC executive director Kwan Yue Yeong declares he cannot work with Loh. But Loh still wins. EQ issues

Recently retired runners Muhamad Hosni and Hamkah Afik voice displeasure with Loh’s methods. Now Hosni is SAA coach - lan lan

2003

SAAA orders national 100m record-holder U.K. Shyam to run in the SEA Games or lose a $90,000 grant. Shyam wants to skip the Vietnam Games because his training was interrupted by exams.

2004

Shyam splits from the national team. He says: ‘I think I spent more time fighting against the system than actually running faster and faster.’ local talent killed

Businessman and former national hurdler Tang Weng Fei replaces Loh as SAA president. Loh becomes a special adviser to the SAA.

2006

Tang steps down. Loh defeats presidential rival Steven Lee in an election.

The SAA drops medal prospects and China-born Du Xianhui (discus) and Zhang Guirong (shot put) two months before the Asian Games after a series of clashes.

2007

Zhang and Du are invited for talks but leave for China again without the SAA’s permission. Loh cuts Du’s financial assistance grant. Zhang returns to the SEA Games team but another thrower, Dong Enxin, goes Awol. PRC recruited by Loh in 1998

2008

Athletes are upset with the SAA’s co-payment scheme in which they must co-pay up to 30 per cent of expenses for overseas preparatory meets.

2009

The SAA postpones the Singapore Open without any explanation. Athletes hoping to use the event to qualify for the SEA Games are unhappy.great organization

An anonymous petition, believed to be signed by over 100 coaches, athletes and parents, is sent to the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports calling for a change of SAA management.

China-born national thrower Luan Wei sues the SAA for allegedly breaching promises made in a 1999 agreement.
The SSC freezes funding to the SAA after an administration fiasco which results in the resignation of SAA CEO Christina Tay.
The SAA is criticised for not contributing more to Singapore’s medal haul at the Laos SEA Games.

I am all for Loh going. No man is indispensible. Not that he lifted Athletics to great heights. The argument is more along the lines that I don't like the resident gangster in the neighbourhood and I don't like to see him replaced by another gangster. Both scenarios will not help athletics. Thus my first post indicating that tenure and terms must be limited. I don't care if he is superman, he still has to go. I already know one idiot who has stayed for 50 years.

Here is the rub, no one including has pointed to one sports association doing well after the govt stepped in. The issues appears in your case to be Loh and not athletics.

I am slightly disappointed with Scroo who while acknowledging Loh should go & SAA Presidential Terms should be limited (all I agree), feels that Loh at the very least thumbed his nose at Barker & Dhillon etc.

I guess anti-establishment is our basic creed but I really would love to hear Scroo's views of Loh's personality & leadership.

Thanks for clarification.

Actually, anybody but Loh for me.

Your point about no NSA doing well after govt step in is a moot point.

It is more right man for right job - in this case, other than soccer-mad Ho Peng Kee, other govt approved candidates like Lee Bee Wah & Teo Chong Tee are unpopular choices.

Still for athletics, I know Tan Eng Yoon is way too old. But no one can question his credentials in sports having also served FAS. C Kunalan & other household name athletes of the 50s/60s/70s golden age should be encouraged to step forward.

I really dun know Edmond Periera & Steven Lee (both previous Loh challengers) are govt men tasked to remove Loh.

Anyway, Loh is too LKY-'I meet you in the cul-de-sac' mould of stubborn leader.

I hope the Messiah Loh will find Cheah an acceptable candidate & step aside gracefully as he had proclaimed.

If not, then he must find Cheah unsuitable & the coming SAA President Election would be one to watch - given Loh's long victorious record in SAA Elections.

If one or two associations have done well after takeover by govt, we won't be having this thread as Loh will have gone, probably taking up gardening. The affliates would have overthrown him 20 years ago. The Affliates are not all silly.

.

the gov does not pick on any1 and use the power of their controlled media to discredit them. so they must b very du lan wif this loh lin kok.

now the gov will have a taste of their own medicine, facing difficulty trying to remove some1 from power.

so regardless how lousy this loh is, if he is the no.1 enemy of the pap, he should receive the anti-pappies' support.

in a more recent report, spore sports council is organising a marathon race, but to have international runners' participation, they need the endorsement of spore atheletics assoc.

saa's response to ssc's proposal was very negative, and yet vivian balaikrishnan said the event would be carry on even though the planning is so shallow and fucked up standard.

Juz like wat sporeans have been receiving all these years. fucked up plans that go heywire. the gov will still forge ahead even though plans and policies are doomed for failure.

This is about DEMOCRACY or the LACK OF IT to be accurate. The person or PUPPETEER behind the latest team of goons is the YOUNG CBK.

Now they have this TANG chap and a whole bunch of PORLUMPARS trying to unseat Loh.

Prostitute press call him oil trader / businessman BUT why never mention he is heavily INVOLVED IN HORSE - RACING.

Maybe someone, a horse-racing fan here got photos of him with his horses when they win. I like to see who else in the pictures with him.

i think there is no right and wrong to this saga. He indeed put in effort in the thing that he love for the past years.
However, what we need to see is the word CHANGE
whatever excuse or arguement, there is NO RESULT
that is the most important.
To let the goverment control or lead by public organisation or not is no important, what important is the sportsman concern & how to let them focus on their sports.
Why the sport must be pull down by politic and power struggle.

If we already in the lowest point, any changes might have some chance to go up? Do you expect to see any changes if loh continue to lead? if it do not happen in the past 20 years, what make you think there be changes now?

Yes, situation might can get worst if he stepped down. But that is the risk that all of us need to take. that make life more interesting.

MANY ARE FOOLED BY THIS SAGA.

IT IS POLITICS FIRST and SPORTS SECOND.
Make no mistake about this.

It is about the SCUMS wanting to control anything and EVERYTHING. It is about democracy.

Why athletics have failed in Singapore is simple. Other countries in ASEAN have caught up with us. And with a bigger population base and not too much emphasis on EDUCATION and paper qualifications.

WHAT ABOUT LOCAL FOOTBALL? I think that is the BIGGEST FAILURE on the local sports scene. BUT do you see the SCUMS disturbing them there? WHY? Because it's under their control.

PEOPLE THAT HATES THE SCUMS AND WANTS DEMOCRACY SHOULD VOTE FOR LOH LIN KOK AND NO ONE ELSE.

actually i agreed with your statement.
But i looking at it beyong the political point of view.
it will be endless fighting and argueing that will drag this sport for another few years.
We need someone that can link up the 2 associtaion , not to fight against it.
We shall look at the result first.
if he is so well liked, all the sportman and woman will not all be against him in the first place.
You can lose the heart of fellow politician and friend( General), but you cannot lose the confident of your own sportman & Woman ( Soldier)
He had lose the respect of his own people, so what are he fighting for?

if all the club is with him, all the sportman& woman is with him , all the coach is with him , and they form a alliences to fight against the SSC, i will raised both my hand and feet to support him.
But now, it seem that everyone is against him and side the SSC.
Iron man approach do not work anymore in this new age.

Loh Lin Kok has been DEMOCRATICALLY elected by the athletics fraternity in Singapore.

With our PROSTITUTE media, even if you are a virgin, they can SPIN that you are a whore.
Who is calling for his dismissal? The people affiliated to the SCUMS.

Just name the names of peope asking Loh to step down. Check their names against the PORLUMPARS and you will see what I mean.

I still believe the MAJORITY of S'pore people supports Loh. Wait and see.

WHY? Because LOH refuses to bring in FTs to represent S'pore in athletics.

PRC FTs were brought in by Tang before.
